Chapter 4 - The Legal Storm Awakens

The aftermath of the encounter at Marlowe & Finch unfolded with the swift, merciless speed of a financial collapse. Within forty-eight hours, headlines across Wall Street and society tabloids were alight with speculation. Rutherford Maritime Terminates $4 Billion Merger with Vale Meridian. In her modest top-floor apartment in Hoboken, Iris sat at her small wooden dining table, drinking hot chamomile tea while winter sunlight streamed through the window overlooking the Hudson River. Across from her sat Julian Vance, a silver-haired attorney with soft eyes and a sharp, brilliant mind. Julian had been a close friend of Iris’s late father, a modest university professor who had always taught Iris that self-respect was worth more than any stock portfolio.
“Dominic’s legal counsel reached out to my office at six o'clock this morning,” Julian said, setting a sleek navy folder onto the table. “They are offering a comprehensive pre-birth settlement.”
Iris didn't open the folder. “What does 'comprehensive' mean in Dominic’s language?”
“It means a five-million-dollar trust fund established in the child’s name, a luxury brownstone in Brooklyn, full coverage of all medical and educational expenses through university, and a monthly stipend for you,” Julian said gently. He paused, watching her closely. “In exchange, he wants joint legal custody, mandatory weekend visitation schedules starting six months after birth, and a binding non-disclosure agreement prohibiting you or the child from speaking to the press about the nature of your marriage or divorce.”
Iris looked out the window at the Manhattan skyline gleaming across the freezing river. It was a stunning cityscape—a wall of glass and steel where men like Dominic calculated the price of everything and understood the value of nothing.
“He wants to buy her,” Iris said softly.
“He wants control, Iris,” Julian corrected gently. “Dominic Vale is a man whose entire identity is built on managing risk. To him, an unmonitored child born out of wedlock—a child living in a modest Hoboken apartment outside his security umbrella—is an unmanaged risk. He is treating this custody arrangement like an acquisition contract.”
“And if I refuse?”
“Then he will file a petition in New York State Supreme Court for emergency paternity determination and shared custody rights the moment she is born,” Julian warned. “He has the top family law firm in the country on retainer. They will paint you as an unstable, secretive mother who fled a loving home without cause, exposing an unborn child to financial hardship out of spite.”
Iris touched her bump. Inside, she felt a small, firm kick—a tiny reminder that she was no longer fighting for just herself. A wave of calm courage swept through her, washing away the residual fear that had haunted her since the afternoon at Marlowe & Finch.
“Let them file,” Iris said, looking Julian straight in the eyes. “We are not accepting his money, Julian. I don't want his five million dollars. I don't want his Brooklyn brownstone. I have my inheritance from my mother’s estate, my modest freelance editing work, and a home full of warmth. I will not sign an NDA that turns my daughter’s life into a corporate secret.”

Julian’s stern face softened into a warm, proud smile. “I hoped you would say that, my dear. If Dominic Vale wants a fight, we won't give him a battle of wealth. We will give him a battle of truth.”
At that exact moment, down on the street below, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb outside the bakery. The rear window rolled down slightly, revealing the sharp profile of Dominic Vale looking up at the small lit window of the third-floor apartment.
