Chapter 10 - Where Love Belongs

Two years later.

The afternoon sun was casting long, golden shadows across the lawn of a small, beautiful coastal home in Kennebunkport, Maine. Sea breezes drifted off the Atlantic Ocean, carrying the crisp, salty scent of pine trees and blooming rugosa roses. It was the same coastal town where Iris and Dominic had originally married six years ago in a quiet ceremony before the world got too loud.

On the grass near the wooden porch, two-year-old Clara was running with joyous, wobbly steps, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Mr. Bellini had gifted her for her second birthday. Her laughter was sweet and bright, echoing off the wooden shingles of the seaside cottage.

Dominic sat on the wide wooden porch steps, watching his daughter with a look of peaceful contentment that money could never buy. His hair was touched with a little more silver at the temples, but the deep lines of stress that had once carved his face were entirely gone. He wore a linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a simple leather watch on his wrist, and a silver wedding band reflecting the afternoon light.

Behind him, the screen door clicked open softly, and Iris stepped onto the porch carrying a tray with two glasses of iced lemonade. She wore a simple white summer dress, her long hair blowing gently in the ocean breeze. She looked vibrant, happy, and completely at ease in her own skin.

Dominic stood up and took the tray from her hands, setting it down on a side table, then wrapped his arms gently around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder as they watched Clara play in the grass.

“She’s fast,” Dominic chuckled softly, feeling Clara’s boundless energy. “She gets that determination from her mother.”

“She gets her stubbornness from her father,” Iris teased gently, leaning her head back against his chest.

They stood together in silence for a long moment, listening to the rhythm of the crashing waves down at the shore and the joyful laughter of their daughter. Their journey had not been easy. It had required tearing down an ivory tower of control, surviving a public scandal, rejecting corporate fortunes, and learning how to communicate with raw, vulnerable honesty.

They had not rushed back into marriage immediately. They had dated slowly for a year, rebuilt their friendship, learned each other’s boundaries, and created a new kind of partnership—one where neither held authority over the other, where love was a daily choice rather than a legal contract.

When they finally remarried on this very lawn a year ago, there were no paparazzi, no corporate directors, and no media headlines. There were only twenty guests—Julian Vance, Mr. and Mrs. Bellini, a few close friends, and little Clara throwing flower petals across the grass.

That evening, after Clara had been tucked into her white oak toddler bed—the very same bed Iris had chosen on that freezing afternoon in Manhattan—Iris and Dominic stood together on the back porch looking out at the ocean under a blanket of brilliant stars.

“Do you ever think about that day at Marlowe & Finch?” Dominic asked quietly, sliding his hand into hers.

Iris smiled, looking out at the dark horizon where the ocean met the sky. “I used to think that afternoon was the end of everything. The moment my quiet secret was exposed to the world.”

“It was the end,” Dominic said softly, turning to face her, his eyes warm with deep, abiding love. “It was the end of the lies, the end of the control, and the end of the fake life I was building. It was the moment that saved me, Iris. It took one hard question from a woman who meant nothing to me to make me realize that the only thing that mattered in this world was standing right in front of me.”

Iris stepped closer, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady, calm beat of his heart. “And how far along are we now, Dominic?” she asked with a soft, playful smile.

Dominic wrapped his arms around her, holding her close beneath the starry night sky.

“We are right where we belong,” he whispered, kissing her hair softly. “Together, forever, and finally free.”
