Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Truth

"No, that's impossible!" Patricia shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as she pointed a trembling, manicured finger directly at my face. "She's nothing! She's a part-time suburban agent who pushes low-tier houses! We gave her allowance! We gifted her household chores for Christmas so she would remember her place!"

"A part-time agent," I repeated, a cold, bitter smile touching my lips as I stepped forward. The casual warmth I usually reserved for my daughters was entirely gone, replaced by the steel resolve of a woman who had built an empire from the ground up while enduring a decade of silent humiliation.

"Do you know why I played along for eleven years, Andrew?" I asked, turning my gaze from Patricia to my trembling husband. "Do you think I was weak? Do you think I was dependent on your pathetic little paychecks?"

Andrew couldn't speak. His lips parted silently, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths as the horrifying puzzle pieces clicked together in his mind. The mysterious multi-million-dollar contracts he had lost out on over the past three years. The anonymous corporate entity that always outbid him on prime commercial real estate. The sudden influx of capital that had saved his flailing startup three years ago—capital that came with strings attached, strings that I had personally pulled.

"Every single major deal you ever bragged about closing," I continued, my voice echoing through the grand foyer, "every corporate merger, every multi-million-dollar property acquisition... Do you know who approved the financing behind the scenes, Andrew? Do you know who let you win small victories just to keep your fragile ego intact so you wouldn't disrupt our daughters' home life?"

"You..." Andrew breathed, the word barely audible. "You were the anonymous angel investor... You funded my company..."

"And now, I am calling the debt," I said crisply.

I motioned to Mr. Harrison, who stepped forward and handed Andrew a thick sheaf of legal documents.

"As of today," Mr. Harrison announced formally, "Apex Global Holdings is foreclosing on all outstanding promissory notes totaling 5.4 million dollars. Furthermore, due to corporate fraud, embezzlement of subsidiary funds, and falsification of financial statements to secure high-tier investments—charges backed by internal audits compiled by our compliance team—your company, Andrew Vance Enterprises, has been placed into immediate receivership."

Patricia let out a guttural gasp and collapsed heavily onto the velvet entryway bench, clutching her chest. "Receiver... receivership? We are ruined. The society board... our friends... the family..."

"Your family?" I looked down at Patricia, my eyes unblinking. "The same family you paraded around while you humiliated my little girls? The same family that sat in silence last night while you threw garbage at eight-year-old Sophia and five-year-old Chloe?"

Andrew suddenly dropped to his knees on the marble floor.

It wasn't out of remorse. It was out of sheer, unadulterated terror. He lunged forward, grabbing the hem of my trousers.

"Lauren! Please! I'm begging you!" he sobbed, his aristocratic mask completely shattered into a million pathetic pieces. "Think of the girls! Think of our family! We can fix this! We can go back to counseling! I'll do whatever you want! Just call off the lawyers! If this goes public, I'll go to prison!"

I looked down at the man who had traded his own flesh and blood for the approval of a toxic, misogynistic dynasty. I felt no pity. Only a profound, liberating emptiness where my sorrow used to be.

I gently stepped out of his grasp, walking over to the front door and pulling it wide open.

"Get out," I said quietly.
