Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

The automated intercom at the front security gate chimed shrilly. I pressed the answer button without moving from my kitchen island.

"Lauren! Open this gate right now!" Patricia's shrill, frantic voice echoed through the speakers, completely devoid of the aristocratic composure she had worn like armor the night before. "How dare you lock us out? Andrew tells me you pulled some absurd stunt with his business accounts this morning! Open this gate before I call the police!"

I pressed the talk button and replied in a calm, melodic tone. "Patricia, you are standing on private property. And technically, you don't own this gate. In fact, you don't own anything at all anymore."

"Open the gate, Lauren!" Andrew screamed, shoving past his mother to grab the intercom box. His hair was disheveled, his tuxedo jacket from the night before wrinkled and stained with spilled wine. All the suave, arrogant charm he had paraded in front of his investors was completely gone, replaced by the naked panic of a cornered animal. "What is the meaning of this? The bank just rejected my corporate card! They said all our business assets have been frozen under a federal default notice!"

"It's not federal, Andrew," I said, my voice cutting through the speaker like ice. "It's civil. And it's coming directly from Apex Global Holdings."

Silence fell over the intercom. Even through the speaker, I could hear the sharp intake of breath Andrew took.

"Apex..." Andrew whispered, the color draining entirely from his face. "Apex Global... That's... that's a multi-billion-dollar corporation. That's owned by an anonymous majority stakeholder. What does that have to do with us?"

"Everything," I replied softly.

I pressed the remote button on my tablet, and the heavy iron security gates slowly swung open. Not because I wanted them inside my personal sanctuary, but because I wanted them to witness the reality of who held the power.

Slowly, their vehicle drove up the winding driveway and parked near the fountain. Andrew and Patricia stepped out, looking up at the sprawling architectural masterpiece with utter bewilderment. They had visited this house twice before for holiday dinners, but Andrew had always lied to his mother, telling her he had purchased it as a secondary investment property to impress the family.

They walked up to the heavy mahogany front door. Before they could even raise a hand to knock, the door unlocked and swung open automatically.

I stood in the entryway, wearing a simple silk blouse and tailored trousers, my posture immaculate. Behind me, the spacious foyer radiated quiet, effortless luxury—far surpassing the rented country estate in Charlottesville.

Patricia marched in first, her face twisted in a sneer of pure fury and disbelief. "What is the meaning of this vulgar display, Lauren? Where are the servants? Why is there no security detail? And more importantly, explain what nonsense Andrew is rambling about regarding our finances!"

"Mother, stop," Andrew muttered, his eyes darting frantically around the foyer. He finally noticed the custom imported artwork on the walls—pieces he had only ever seen in elite corporate catalogues. "Lauren... whose house is this?"

Before I could answer, a sharp rap echoed at the front door.

Two men in sharp charcoal suits stepped into the foyer, holding thick leather portfolios. They didn't look at Andrew or Patricia. They walked straight past them, stopped in front of me, and nodded respectfully.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vance," the lead attorney, Mr. Harrison, said clearly. "We have completed the asset seizure audit as you instructed."

Patricia gasped, clutching her pearls. "Mrs. Vance? I am the matriarch of this family! How dare you address her by my title!"

Mr. Harrison turned his head slowly, looking at Patricia with professional detachment. "Ma'am, the primary deed to this estate, along with all subsidiary corporate holdings associated with Vance Enterprises and Andrew’s personal accounts, are registered exclusively under Mrs. Lauren Vance—sole owner and principal shareholder of Apex Global Holdings."

The world seemed to stop spinning for Andrew and Patricia.

Andrew staggered backward, his hand catching the edge of a console table to keep from falling. "Apex... Lauren... You... You're the majority stakeholder? You own Apex?"
