Chapter 6 - The Balcony Escape

The crisp afternoon air hit my face as I pulled the balcony glass door shut behind me, pressing myself flat against the stone pillar. Below me, the sprawling back garden stretched out toward the pool house.

I heard Evelyn’s footsteps click across the hardwood floor of the study.

“Hello?” she called out, her voice laced with suspicion. I held my breath, clutching the flash drive tightly in my pocket like a lifeline.

After a tense minute of silence—during which I could hear her inspecting her desk—her footsteps retreated back toward the hallway. I waited another thirty seconds before quietly vaulting over the balcony railing, grabbing onto the thick ivy and decorative stonework of the trellis below, and dropping softly onto the mulch of the garden bed.

My knees absorbed the impact with a dull thud. I brushed the dirt off my jeans, checked to make sure no one was watching from the kitchen windows, and jogged low toward the service exit, slipping back into my car just as Evelyn’s Mercedes pulled completely out of the front courtyard drive.

I hit the accelerator, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs all the way back to Rachel’s house, where Hannah and Uncle Thomas were waiting.

When I burst through the front door, breathless and disheveled, both of them stood up instantly.

“Did you get it?” Rachel asked, her eyes wide.

I pulled the small black flash drive from my pocket and set it down on the coffee table like a ticking bomb. “I got everything. The emails with her lawyer, the edited audio transcripts, and the proof that she orchestrated the garden party specifically to trigger an emergency court filing.”

Hannah walked over slowly, picking up the flash drive. Her expression was a mix of vindication and profound relief. She looked at me, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “You risked walking right into her den for this.”

“I put us in this position by trusting her blindly,” I said, stepping closer and taking her hands. “I needed to fix it. We all did.”

Uncle Thomas plugged the drive into his laptop, pulling up the email correspondence and audio files. As we listened to the recorded phone calls—where Evelyn systematically twisted my words and coached herself on how to provoke Hannah—the full scope of her calculated cruelty became undeniable.

“This isn't just a family dispute anymore,” Uncle Thomas said, his face grim with professional resolve as a former corporate consultant who understood legal leverage. “This is systematic harassment, entrapment, and a calculated conspiracy to alienate a mother from her child.”

“Can we take this to court?” Hannah asked, her voice steady.

“Better,” Thomas smiled thinly. “We take this to her attorney first, with a copy to a family court judge as part of a preemptive filing. We expose her before she ever gets the chance to step into a courtroom with her fake narrative.”
