Chapter 4 - The Family Meeting

The next morning, the air in our living room was tense. Rachel had called an emergency family summit, summoning not just us, but our uncle Thomas—Evelyn’s younger brother, who had spent decades watching our mother’s controlling maneuvers from a safe distance.

Uncle Thomas sat in the armchair, swirling a cup of black coffee while looking over the photocopies of Evelyn’s draft petition and observation logs. He let out a long, weary sigh.

“Well, she hasn't lost her touch,” Thomas muttered, shaking his head. “Evelyn has been orchestrating people’s lives since we were teenagers. She treats her children and her grandchildren like chess pieces. If you don't fit the exact narrative she wants for her social circle, she rewrites you.”

“She’s trying to steal my son, Uncle Thomas,” Hannah said tightly, sitting beside me on the sofa. She had barely slept, her eyes dark-circled, but her resolve had solidified overnight. She was no longer just hurt; she was fierce.

“I know, sweetheart, and I’m sorry,” Thomas replied gently. “Evelyn has deep pockets, and she’s retained some sharks in the past for estate disputes. If she’s filed or is about to file for emergency guardianship citing instability, the court will take it seriously until proven otherwise—especially with David’s text messages acting as primary corroboration.”

“How do we stop her before she officially files with the court?” I asked, leaning forward. “Can we get a restraining order? Can we cut her off completely?”

“A restraining order requires immediate physical threat or harassment, which she’s clever enough to cloak under the guise of ‘grandparental concern’ and ‘helping out,’” Thomas explained. “To beat Evelyn, you can’t just block her. You have to expose her pattern of behavior. You need to prove that she manufactured the crisis.”

Rachel crossed her arms, pacing near the fireplace. “Which means we need more than just yesterday’s garden party disaster. We need a paper trail of her manipulation, her staging, and her interference in David and Hannah’s marriage.”

“And I might know where to find it,” I said slowly, a realization dawning on me.

Everyone turned to look at me.

“What are you talking about, David?” Rachel asked.

“Evelyn’s study at her estate,” I said, my mind racing. “She keeps a meticulous digital backup of everything—business records, family trust documents, and personal logs. She’s old-fashioned in some ways, but she loves digital organization. She has a secure home server where she archives correspondence.”

Hannah frowned. “You want to break into your mother’s house?”

“Not break in. I still have my biometric access saved on the smart-lock security system from when I managed her estate IT upgrades two years ago,” I explained. “And I know her master password convention. If we can get into her digital files, we’ll find her communications with lawyers, her notes on previous family members she’s manipulated, and proof that she staged the evidence against Hannah.”

Thomas raised an eyebrow, half-impressed, half-alarmed. “That’s digital trespassing, David. If you get caught, she could turn it around on you.”

“If we don’t do it, she’s going to tear our family apart piece by piece,” I said firmly, looking at Hannah. I reached out and took her hand, squeezing it gently. “I built this mess by confiding in her. I’m going to clean it up.”
