Chapter 4 - The Midnight Search

The west corridor of the Harrison mansion was shrouded in shadows, far from the brilliant glass architecture of the main living areas. It was a utilitarian wing, lined with locked storage rooms, medical supply closets, and service elevators that connected the upper floors to the kitchens below.

Lily walked briskly down the hallway, her sneakers making almost no sound against the thick Persian runner. Arthur followed close behind her, his usual imposing presence tempered by the heavy burden of anxiety.

"This is it," Lily whispered, stopping in front of a heavy steel door marked with a digital keypad.

Arthur stepped forward, punching in a twelve-digit override code with practiced speed. The heavy lock clicked open with a satisfying mechanical thud.

Inside, the room was a miniature pharmacy floor—shelves upon shelves of sterile medical supplies, intravenous fluids, diagnostic kits, and emergency pharmaceutical backups.

"My great-grandmother wrote that heavy metal and organic alkaloid poisons bind rapidly to activated carbon," Lily said, scanning the rows of labeled bins with sharp, focused eyes. "Nurse Miller kept emergency detox kits on the third shelf down, behind the saline flushes."

Arthur moved instantly, his large hands sorting through the clinical boxes with surprising dexterity. "This one?" he asked, holding up a sealed medical pouch labeled Emergency Charcoal Suspension & Isotonic Flush.

"Yes! That's it," Lily said, grabbing a box of sterile syringes and IV extension lines. "And we need a fresh bag of pure normal saline. No additives. Nothing Dr. Evans's team touched."

As Arthur loaded the supplies into a stainless-steel medical tray, a sudden, sharp sound echoed from the far end of the service corridor.

Clink.

It was the distinct sound of a metal cart rolling across the tile floor near the service elevator.

Lily froze, her hand hovering over a box of gauze. She looked up at Arthur. The billionaire's expression hardened into ice. He motioned for Lily to stay silent, stepping quietly toward the doorway of the supply room.

Peering out into the dim hallway, Arthur saw a familiar figure hurrying toward the service exit. It was Nurse Miller. She was carrying a heavy canvas medical duffel bag over her shoulder, her movements frantic and hurried. She was attempting to slip out of the mansion through the service wing before anyone noticed her departure.

Arthur stepped out into the hallway, his voice cutting through the silence like a whip.

"Going somewhere, Nurse Miller?"

The nurse stopped dead in her tracks. She slowly turned around, her face pale, a forced, nervous smile trembling on her lips.

"Mr. Harrison... I was just... gathering my personal equipment per your instructions to leave..."

"With hospital-grade restricted antitoxins and confidential patient logs in your duffel?" Arthur stepped closer, his shadow swallowing her whole. "Open the bag."

Panic flashed in Nurse Miller’s eyes. She backed away toward the service door, her hand slipping inside her pocket. "You don't understand, Mr. Harrison—Dr. Evans said—"

Before she could finish, security guards emerged from the cross-corridor, summoned silently by Arthur’s smartwatch alert moments earlier. They pinned Nurse Miller’s arms to her sides, ripping the duffel bag from her grasp.

Arthur unzipped the bag. Inside lay a collection of unmarked glass vials, digital transaction records from offshore bank accounts, and a portable chemical ledger detailing every single dose of slow-acting neurotoxin administered to Daniel over the last six months.

"Take her to the basement security holding," Arthur ordered, his voice dangerously low. "Call the federal authorities. Tell them we have a corporate assassination attempt in progress."

Nurse Miller thrashed against the guards, her voice turning shrill and desperate. "You can't prove anything! Evans planned it all! He wanted the boy out of the way so the pharmaceutical merger could go through without family interference! You'll never pin this on me alone!"

May you like

"Watch me," Arthur replied coldly, turning his back on her as the guards dragged her away.

He picked up the medical tray containing the emergency supplies Lily had gathered, and together, they turned back toward Daniel's room.
