Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

The old meatpacking plant was a labyrinth of rusted metal, rotting wood, and the lingering, metallic scent of decades of slaughter. Rain hammered violently against the corrugated iron roof, creating a deafening roar inside the vast, dark structure.
Marcus walked through the main doors, his footsteps echoing softly. A single spotlight was turned on in the center of the warehouse. Tied to two wooden chairs beneath the light were Emily and Leo. Emily had a bruise on her cheek, her eyes wide with terror, but she was fiercely whispering comfort to Leo, who was clutching his chest, his breathing rapidly deteriorating into a dangerous asthmatic wheeze.
"Ah, the romantic himself!" Victor Vance’s voice echoed from the shadows as he stepped into the light, flanked by six heavily armed guards. "I honestly didn't think you'd show up alone, Marcus. You really do care about them."
Marcus kept his hands away from his sides, his eyes locked on Emily and Leo. "Let the boy go, Victor. He needs his medicine. Look at him. He can't breathe."
"I don't give a damn about his breathing!" Vance snarled, his face twisted in jealous rage. "You humiliated me, Marcus! You made me look weak in front of my own crew. Tonight, you give me your West Side numbers, or I watch this kid suffocate, and then I put a bullet in his mother."
Emily looked up at Marcus, tears streaming down her face. "Marcus... please... save Leo," she choked out, using his first name for the very first time.
Marcus looked at Leo. The boy’s face was turning a faint shade of blue. He didn't have ten minutes. He didn't even have five.
"Alright," Marcus said softly, raising his hands. "You want the West Side? It's yours. Let me give the kid his inhaler first. I have it in my pocket."
Vance smirked, feeling completely victorious. "Slowly, Vale. Pull it out slowly."
Marcus reached into his coat pocket. But he didn't pull out an inhaler.

With lightning speed born of a lifetime of survival, Marcus drew his pistol. Before Vance’s guards could even raise their weapons, Marcus fired three precise shots. The three guards on the left dropped instantly.
Vance screamed in panic, diving behind a stack of wooden crates as the remaining guards opened fire. Marcus threw himself behind a rusted steel pillar as bullets tore through the air, sparks flying in the darkness.
