Chapter 3 - The Debt of a Ghost

Marcus didn't leave after the boy stabilized. He escorted them up the dark, narrow stairwell to Apartment 2B. The building smelled of boiled cabbage and old dampness, a stark contrast to the penthouse Marcus called home. Inside Emily's apartment, the furniture was sparse but meticulously clean. There were empty spaces on the walls where pictures used to hang—unmistakable signs of a life sold off piece by piece.

"You're Marcus Vale," Emily said, standing by the small kitchen counter while Leo slept exhaustedly on the couch under a faded blanket. "I know the name. Everyone in this part of Chicago knows the name. You own the banks that foreclose on us, the men who enforce the docks. Why are you here?"

Marcus placed her cracked iPhone gently on the counter alongside the remaining two inhalers. "I own the pawn shop you went to. I saw you sell this."

Emily looked at the phone, then looked away, ashamed. "I had no choice."

"Where is your husband, Emily?" Marcus asked directly. The paperwork had listed her as married, yet she was fighting this war entirely on her own.

A shadow crossed her face, deeper and darker than the fear she had shown earlier. "David... David is a good man. Or he used to be. He took out a loan to start a logistics business. It went under. The people he borrowed from... they aren't standard bankers. He's been hiding for three weeks because they threatened to take Leo if he didn't pay."

Marcus felt his jaw set. "Who did he borrow from?"

Emily hesitated, swallowing hard. "A man named Victor Vance."

Marcus's expression didn't change, but inside, a cold fury ignited. Victor Vance was a ruthless, mid-tier loan shark who had been trying to chip away at Marcus’s territory for months. He was sloppy, cruel, and targeted the desperate.

"David thought if he stayed away, they wouldn't look here," Emily whispered, tears finally spilling over. "But Victor's men came yesterday. They said if David doesn't show up with fifty thousand dollars by the end of the week, they’ll find another way to collect from me and Leo. I've sold everything, Mr. Vale. Everything. And I still only have a few hundred dollars."

Marcus walked over to the window, looking out at the neon lights of the city bleeding through the rain. He had built his empire on ruthlessness, but he had a code. You don't hunt women. You don't starve children.

"Your husband is a coward for leaving you to face them alone," Marcus said coldly.

"He's trying to protect us!" she defended, her voice fiercely loyal despite her exhaustion.

Marcus turned around. "He failed. But you haven't. Go to sleep, Emily. Tomorrow, your debt with Vance is canceled."
