Part 4: Fall of the Untouchables

The hospital hallway filled with the crisp, unmistakable click of heavy boots.

Four federal marshals, accompanied by two military police officers, marched directly into the observation room. Their faces were stone-cold, their badges gleaming under the fluorescent lights.

“Ethan Prescott? Brandon Prescott? Margaret Prescott?” the lead marshal asked, pulling out a sheaf of heavy legal documents.

No one answered. Brandon was still staring blankly at the floor, while Ethan was trembling uncontrollably on his knees. Margaret looked like she had aged ten years in the span of thirty seconds, her chest heaving as panic finally choked her pride.

“You are under federal arrest,” the marshal announced, his voice echoing in the small room. “Charges include corporate fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, witness intimidation, and unlawful imprisonment. You have the right to remain silent...”

As the cold steel of handcuffs clicked around Ethan’s wrists, he let out a pathetic whimpering sound. He looked up at me, his eyes wide with a desperate, pleading terror.

“Emily...” Ethan choked out, trying to crawl toward my daughter’s bed. “Em, please! Tell your mom to call them off! We’re married! You love me! Tell her this is a mistake!”

Emily pulled the hospital blanket a little tighter around her bruised shoulders. She looked down at the man who had terrorized, locked away, and beaten her, her eyes completely devoid of the fear she had carried just an hour ago.

“Don't ever look at me again,” Emily said softly, her voice steady and clear. “And don't ever call me your wife.”

The marshals yanked Ethan up by his arms, hauling him to his feet. Brandon didn't even fight back as cuffs were slapped on his wrists as well. He kept muttering, “This isn't happening... this isn't happening...” over and over like a broken mantra.

Margaret held her head high out of sheer, stubborn habit, but as the marshals guided her toward the door, she cast one final, venomous glare in my direction.

“You think you’ve won, Colonel?” Margaret hissed through clenched teeth. “Arthur still has offshore accounts. He has judges in his pocket who haven't been reached yet. We’ll be out by morning, and we will destroy every single thing you love.”

“Your husband was arrested three minutes ago at his private country club,” I replied smoothly, leaning down so only she could hear. “And as for your offshore accounts? They were seized by Interpol under reciprocal counter-intelligence protocols before you even finished your sentence. You don't have a penny left, Margaret. You are entirely, permanently bankrupt.”

The color completely vanished from her face. The last vestige of her arrogant defiance crumbled into dust. Without another word, the marshals escorted the three Prescott family members out of the room, their expensive shoes shuffling defeatedly down the hallway.

The heavy double doors swung shut behind them, leaving a profound, profound silence in the room.

I let out a long, slow breath, feeling the crushing weight of the last hour settle into my bones. I turned back toward the bed, my posture softening instantly as I looked at my daughter.

Emily reached out a trembling hand, her fingers still marked with dark, ugly bruises.

“Mom...” she whispered, a single tear cutting a clean path down her dusty cheek. “Are we really safe now?”

May you like

I sat down on the edge of the hospital mattress, taking her fragile hand in mine and kissing her knuckles gently.

“Yes, my sweet girl,” I said, smiling through the burning sting in my own eyes. “You are safe. No one will ever hurt you again. Not them, not anyone.”
