Part 3: The House of Cards

Twenty minutes had passed since I placed that call, and the atmosphere in the hospital room had shifted dramatically.
Ethan had tried to storm out twice, but a pair of armed military police officers—dispatched from the local reserve depot on direct orders from the Pentagon—were now standing quietly outside the double doors of the emergency ward. When Ethan tried to push past them, the lead sergeant, a massive man with three combat tours under his belt, had simply placed a heavy hand on Ethan’s chest and said, “Step back, civilian. Area is under federal lockdown.”
Panic was finally beginning to pierce the armor of the Prescott family's arrogance.
Margaret was frantically tapping at her gold-plated smartphone, her face growing paler by the second. “My calls aren’t going through,” she muttered, her voice trembling slightly. “Every single bank line is returning a system error. The corporate treasurer isn't answering. What is happening?”
Brandon was pacing the small room like a trapped animal, glaring at me with venomous hatred. “This is illegal!” he shouted, slamming his fist against the drywall. “You can't do this! You're abusing your authority! Dad! Dad is going to destroy you!”
Right on cue, Brandon’s phone rang.
He snatched it up so fast he nearly dropped it. “Dad! Thank God! Some crazy federal agents just swarmed the corporate office downtown! They’re seizing the servers! They locked down all our accounts—”
Brandon stopped talking.
The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse. His jaw went slack, and the phone slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the linoleum floor.
“Dad?” Brandon whispered, his voice cracking. “Dad... what do you mean the Feds are at the house? What do you mean the governor won't take your calls?”
Margaret rushed over to her eldest son, grabbing his arm. “Brandon! What did Arthur say? What’s happening to the accounts?”
“They’re gone,” Brandon whispered, staring blankly at the floor. “Dad said... Dad said every single corporate account has been hit with a federal freeze order signed by the Department of Justice. The stock has been halted. The SEC just delisted Prescott Global. The entire empire... it’s liquidating in real-time.”
“That’s impossible!” Margaret shrieked, losing her composure entirely. Her polished facade cracked wide open, revealing the frantic, desperate parasite underneath. She spun around to face me, her eyes wild with fury and disbelief. “What did you do? What kind of monster are you?!”
“I am a mother,” I said coldly, stepping between her and Emily’s bed. “And twenty-seven years ago, before I wore these ribbons, I wasn't just an ordinary soldier. I spent five years assigned to the Department of Defense’s elite financial warfare and asset recovery division. I spent my career mapping out how shadow syndicates, corrupt cartels, and filthy corporate dynasties launder money and buy politicians.”
I took a slow step toward her.
“Your husband didn't build his empire through legitimate business, Margaret. He grew it on a foundation of tax evasion, municipal bribery, environmental dumping, and insider trading. All it took was one single command code to pull the foundational pin out of the house of cards you built.”
Just then, the wall-mounted television in the hospital room—which had been playing local news quietly in the background—suddenly flashed with a breaking news banner.
BREAKING NEWS: FEDERAL RAID AT PRESCOTT GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS IN CHARLOTTE.
The screen showed aerial footage of heavily armed FBI and IRS-CID agents swarming the fifty-story glass skyscraper downtown. Black-suited agents were carrying out boxes of documents, while federal marshals slapped seizure notices across the front glass doors.
The news anchor’s voice echoed through the room: “...Prescott Global, long considered one of the most powerful and untouchable conglomerates in North Carolina, has collapsed in a matter of minutes. Federal authorities report an unprecedented, multi-agency sweep following the activation of a top-tier national security directive. Assets exceeding four billion dollars have been frozen. Warrants have just been issued for the arrest of patriarch Arthur Prescott, as well as his sons Brandon and Ethan Prescott...”
Ethan dropped to his knees.

His expensive Italian leather shoes scraped against the floor as his legs gave out completely. He stared at the television screen in absolute horror, realizing that his life of luxury, sports cars, private jets, and endless entitlement had evaporated into thin air in less time than it took to eat lunch.
Margaret stood frozen, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, utterly destroyed by the realization that her family’s supreme power was nothing more than a fragile illusion.
