Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

The afternoon sun cast a golden hue across the Boston backyard as Clara and I stepped out onto the patio. Mateo spotted us immediately, abandoning the soccer ball and running over at a full sprint, the golden retriever bounding eagerly at his heels.

“Nanny Rosa! Aunt Clara! Look how many times I juggled the ball! Twelve times without dropping it!” Mateo beamed, his face flushed with healthy color and unbridled joy.

I dropped to one knee, open arms ready, and caught him as he threw himself into a tight hug. He buried his face in my neck, just like he used to do on those terrifying nights in the nursery, but this time there was no trembling, no fear, no hidden micro-infusions humming beneath his skin. Just a healthy, happy eight-year-old boy.

“Twelve times? That’s a new personal record, champ,” I laughed, pulling back to look into his bright, clear eyes.

“Does that mean we can get ice cream?” Mateo grinned mischievously, looking back and forth between Clara and me.

“Ice cream is definitely on the menu,” Clara laughed, walking over and ruffling his messy brown hair. “But first, Rosa has something very important she wants to share with you.”

Mateo turned his attention back to me, tilting his head with curiosity. “What is it?”

I reached behind my back and pulled out the thick envelope, holding it out between us. I carefully slid out the top document—the one bearing the official seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts family court, listing my name alongside Clara’s as his legal guardian and permanent family.

“It means, Mateo Vale, that I am officially not just your nanny anymore,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “It means I’m your aunt, your family, and I’m not going anywhere. Ever.”

Mateo stared at the paper, reading the bold letters, and then his face lit up with a smile so wide and radiant it seemed to outshine the autumn sun.

“Forever?” he whispered.

“Forever,” I promised, pulling him into another fierce, enveloping hug.

The golden retriever barked happily, jumping up to rest its paws on our knees, completing the circle of a family reborn from the ashes of deceit.
