Chapter 4 - The House of Glass

The walnut-paneled study on the ground floor smelled of old leather, expensive scotch, and suppressed panic. While paramedics rushed Mateo into the back of an ambulance parked on the gravel courtyard, Detective Thorne had converted Daniel’s private sanctuary into an impromptu interrogation room.

Daniel sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his fingers laced tightly together, pretending to look calm. But the frantic twitch in his left eye betrayed him. Vivienne paced back and forth by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her heels clicking a staccato rhythm against the Persian rug.

I stood near the door, still wearing my apron, holding the confiscated device in a sterile evidence bag Marcus had provided.

“Dr. Harlan's firm is a private boutique clinic in Geneva with a shell office downtown,” Marcus said, tossing a thick manila folder onto Daniel’s desk. The pages slid across the polished wood, stopping against Daniel’s hands. “They specialize in behavioral compliance therapies. Chemical restraints, memory suppression, and micro-infusion delivery systems. Very high-end. Very illegal.”

Daniel didn't look at the folder. “My son has a severe neurological disorder. Dr. Harlan was treating him for involuntary motor spasms.”

“Is that what you told Eleanor before she went swimming in the indoor pool?” I asked quietly.

Daniel’s head snapped up, his eyes blazing with murderous intent. “Shut your mouth, you insolent—”

“Enough!” Marcus slammed his hand down on the desk, the loud report echoing through the quiet study. He leaned over Daniel, invading his personal space. “Eleanor Vale discovered the same thing Rosa did. She found out you and Vivienne were liquidating her personal trust to fund your failing tech acquisitions. She threatened to take Mateo and go to the authorities. That same night, she had a ‘tragic accident’ in three feet of water.”

Vivienne stopped pacing. Her face went chalk white, but her voice remained chillingly smooth. “Detective, you have zero proof connecting us to Eleanor’s death. The coroner’s report ruled it accidental drowning.”

“The coroner who signed that report just retired to the Cayman Islands last week and bought a multi-million-dollar villa,” Marcus replied, offering a thin, humorless smile. “Our financial crimes unit is auditing his bank accounts as we speak. Turns out, a wire transfer from a shell company matching Vivienne’s maiden name cleared three days after the funeral.”

Silence fell over the room, heavy and suffocating. The walls of the mansion—the grand estate Daniel had built to project absolute power and invulnerability—seemed to shrink around them.

“Rosa,” Marcus said, turning to me. “Take the evidence bag down to my car. Forensics is waiting at the gates. I’ll meet you in a minute.”

I nodded, gripping the evidence bag tightly. As I walked past Daniel, he didn't look at me. He was staring at his hands, watching an empire built on lies finally crumble into dust.
