Chapter 8 - Reunion in Room 408

The walk back down the corridor felt entirely different this time. The sterile hospital walls no longer felt like a prison perimeter; they felt like a threshold to a brand-new beginning. Lily practically skipped beside me, her small hand clutching mine, her earlier terror replaced by the bright, unstoppable optimism of a child who knew her family was safe.

When we pushed open the door to Room 408, Clara was sitting upright in the bed, color already returning to her cheeks. The dull, lifeless glaze in her eyes had been replaced by a bright, emotional warmth.

"Mom!" Lily cried out, dropping my hand and running straight to the bedside, throwing her arms gently around Clara's neck.

"Oh, my sweet girl," Clara sobbed softly, burying her face in Lily's hair and holding her as if she would never let go. "I'm so sorry... I was so scared I wouldn't get back to you."

I stepped up to the bed, my throat tightening with a rush of overwhelming emotion. I reached out and cupped Clara’s face, pressing my forehead gently against hers.

"You're safe now, honey," I whispered, my voice breaking. "It's all over. Marlene is gone. The police have her."

Clara pulled back, looking at me with a mixture of disbelief and profound relief. "She... she gave me a cup of herbal tea this morning before you went out to mow the lawn. She told me it was a special remedy for my dizziness. The moment I drank it, my limbs felt like lead. I heard her arguing with Lily down the hall, but I couldn't even lift my head to call out for help."

"You don't have to carry any of that anymore," I said, kissing her forehead. "Detective Miller and the doctors have everything. Her forged papers, the phone, the medical evidence. She's never going to have power over you—or any of us—ever again."

Dr. Evans stood quietly by the doorway, smiling softly. "Her vital signs are stabilizing rapidly now that the heavy sedatives are clearing her system. We'll keep her under observation until tomorrow morning, but barring any complications, she'll be cleared for discharge."

"Thank you, Doctor," Clara said, her voice shaking with gratitude. "Thank you for listening to my husband."

"Thank your daughter," Dr. Evans corrected warmly, looking down at Lily. "She's the one who held her ground."

Clara looked down at Lily with tears streaming down her face, pulling her in for another tight hug. "You're my little hero, Lily. My absolute hero."
