Chapter 7 - The Interrogation and the Web Unravels

Within an hour of Marlene's dramatic arrest in Room 408, the situation shifted from a frantic hospital rescue to a full-scale police investigation. Officer Vance and two detectives from the local precinct took over a private consultation room down the hall, setting up a temporary interview hub while Clara continued to rest under heavy medical supervision.
I sat across the metal table from Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with sharp gray eyes and a calm, methodical demeanor. Lily sat safely in the corner of the room, coloring in a sketchpad provided by a kind-hearted pediatric nurse while sipping a cup of hot cocoa.
"Mr. Hayes, let's go over the timeline one more time," Detective Miller said, tapping a pen against a thick file folder containing the forged power of attorney, Marlene's handwritten notes, and the contents of the blue leather case. "According to our preliminary cyber-forensics team, the phone we recovered from Mrs. Whitaker's car trunk contained dozens of recorded voice memos and text message drafts detailing a months-long plan to systematically incapacitate your wife."
I rubbed my temples, the lingering adrenaline of the afternoon finally giving way to a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. "I had no idea. She acted like the quintessential doting mother. She moved into our guest room under the guise of helping us save money after my freelance contracts dipped last winter. I thought she was just being... well, overbearing. The way mothers-in-law often are."
"Control-oriented abusers rarely look like monsters on day one, Mr. Hayes," Detective Miller said gently. "They isolate, they infiltrate, and slowly they build a legal and financial cage around their victims. According to the bank records we pulled from her personal briefcase, Mrs. Whitaker was in the process of transferring ownership of your primary residence—and Clara's sizeable inheritance from her late father—into a blind trust controlled exclusively by her."
The room felt suddenly stifling. I looked over at Lily, who was quietly humming to herself as she colored a blue sky on her paper. If I hadn't stepped inside that house when I did, if Lily hadn't been brave enough to defy her grandmother's threats... I didn't want to finish the thought.
"Is Clara going to be named safe from any legal fallout regarding these forged documents?" I asked, leaning forward.
"Absolutely," Detective Miller nodded reassuringly. "The handwriting analysis alone proves the signatures were coerced or outright fabricated. Furthermore, the hospital's toxicological report confirms she was being slowly poisoned with high-grade sedatives over the last three weeks. Mrs. Whitaker is facing multiple felony counts of attempted poisoning, grand larceny, elder/dependent abuse, and intimidation of a minor. She won't be seeing daylight anytime soon, let alone stepping foot near your family again."

Just then, the door to the consultation room opened softly, and Dr. Evans stepped inside, smiling warmly.
"Mr. Hayes? Your wife is fully awake, alert, and asking for you and Lily."
