Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Back in the hospital, my recovery was nothing short of miraculous, driven entirely by an unrelenting surge of adrenaline and maternal fierce protectiveness. Within forty-eight hours, I had been transferred out of the ICU and into a private VIP recovery suite, though I insisted on spending as much time as possible down in the NICU sitting beside my son’s incubator.
His name was Leo. Leo Vance-Pierce.
At first, I had considered stripping Preston's last name entirely from the birth certificate, but legal counsel advised me that keeping it would strengthen any future custody and asset division proceedings. So, Leo remained a Pierce on paper, but in my heart, and in the eyes of everyone who mattered, he was entirely mine.
"His oxygen saturation is stabilizing, Elena," Sarah said gently, standing beside me as I rested my hand through the porthole of the incubator, gently touching Leo’s tiny, warm fingers. He gripped my index finger with surprising strength, a miniature echo of the hand that had snapped the steel rail.
"He's a fighter," I murmured, a soft smile finally touching my lips. "Just like his mother."
"You have visitors," Sarah added, stepping aside as the door to the NICU consultation room swung open.
Stepping through the threshold was Victor Vance—my father, a legendary trial attorney whose name alone struck fear into corporate boardrooms across the state. Behind him walked Marcus Sterling, the senior partner of the city's most ruthless family law firm.
My father’s eyes were bloodshot, not from exhaustion, but from a cold, controlled fury that had been burning since the moment he received Sarah's emergency call two nights ago. He walked straight over to me, gently cupping my face in his hands, his thumb brushing away a stray tear.
"My brave girl," my father whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "When I heard what that monster did to you... I had to talk myself out of flying to the hospital with a baseball bat."
"Save the bat for the courtroom, Dad," I replied, my voice steady, carrying the chilling calm of a surgeon preparing for a complex amputation. "I want him dismantled. Every asset, every credential, every shred of professional dignity he ever possessed."
Marcus Sterling stepped forward, opening a thick leather briefcase and laying a series of impeccably organized documents across the consultation table.
"Dr. Vance—Elena," Marcus began, his tone strictly professional yet deeply respectful. "We have already filed a comprehensive legal package. First, a civil lawsuit for medical malpractice, gross negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, seeking thirty million in damages from both Preston and the hospital's malpractice insurance pool."
I nodded slowly. "And the divorce?"
"Filed this morning under fault-based grounds: adultery, extreme cruelty, and professional sabotage," Marcus continued, flipping to a new section. "Thanks to Sarah and the surgical team’s airtight testimonies, as well as the hospital’s internal compliance logs, we have undisputed evidence. Furthermore, we have subpoenaed Preston's phone and email records. Our investigators have already uncovered extensive digital correspondence between him and his intern, Khloe Jenkins, detailing an ongoing affair funded in part by hospital research grants."
A dark satisfaction settled deep within my bones. Preston hadn't just committed medical malpractice; he had signed his own financial and professional death warrant.
"What about custody?" I asked, the most important question of all hanging in the balance.
May you like
"Sole physical and legal custody," Marcus stated without hesitation. "Given his current criminal investigation, his medical license suspension, and the documented trauma he inflicted upon you during delivery, no family court judge in this state will grant him visitation rights without strict, supervised psychological evaluation—if at all."
My father placed a heavy, reassuring hand on my shoulder. "You focus on healing, sweetheart, and on little Leo. Let us handle the butchers. Preston thought he could treat you like a disposable object in his operating room. We are going to show him what happens when you wake a sleeping lioness."
