Chapter 4 - The Serpent's Nest

While I fought my way back to consciousness in the ICU, the world outside my hospital room was spinning entirely out of control for the people who had conspired against me.
In a quiet, upscale coffee shop three blocks away from the hospital, Khloe sat stirring her latte, her fingers trembling slightly against the ceramic cup. Her career as an ambitious medical intern was supposed to be a carefully orchestrated ladder, climbing over the backs of established physicians straight into a prestigious residency—with Preston Pierce acting as her personal stepping stone and protector.
Instead, the ladder had just collapsed into an abyss.
The bell above the coffee shop door chimed, and Preston walked in. He looked twenty years older than he had twenty-four hours ago. His hair was uncombed, his eyes were bloodshot and hollow, and his designer suit looked as though he had slept in it. He didn't order anything; he slid into the booth across from Khloe, his gaze fixed on the table with a dead, terrifying intensity.
"Preston..." Khloe began, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness and concern. "I heard what happened. I'm so, so sorry. The board is completely unfair! They're just protecting Elena because she's the ER chief!"
Preston didn't answer immediately. He slowly raised his head, his bloodshot eyes locking onto hers. There was no warmth in them anymore. No lingering affection, no protective instinct, and certainly no desire. Just a cold, venomous realization.
"They suspended my license, Khloe," he said, his voice dangerously low, almost a whisper. "The medical board has frozen my credentials pending a full criminal inquiry. My career is over. Everything I built... gone in an afternoon."
"It's not your fault!" Khloe pressed on, leaning forward, placing a manicured hand over his. "It was Elena's fault! She engineered this! She's always been jealous of—"
Preston violently jerked his hand away, the sudden movement making Khloe flinch back in genuine shock.
"Shut up."
The two words cracked like a whip across the table. A few nearby patrons turned to look, but Preston didn't care.
"Stop lying," he growled, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Stop pretending you were the victim. I reviewed the security footage from the hallway and the prep room this morning before they locked me out of the system."
Khloe’s face lost every ounce of color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
"I saw you," Preston continued, his teeth clenched so tightly his jaw muscles strained against his skin. "I saw you step on her tray on purpose. I saw you dig your nails into her arm while she was having a contraction. You provoked her, you manipulated me into punishing her, and you fed my ego until I thought I was acting like a god in that room."
"Preston, I—I was just stressed! She intimidated me!"
"You used me," Preston hissed, leaning across the table until his face was inches from hers, his eyes burning with pure hatred. "You flattered me because you wanted a fast track to your residency, and I was stupid enough to let my arrogance blind me to what you really are—a manipulative, vicious parasite."
Tears sprang to Khloe's eyes, this time entirely real, born of terror as she realized her protector had turned into her executioner. "If you ruin me, Preston, I swear to God I'll tell everyone about us! I'll show them the texts, the gifts, the weekends we spent—"
Preston let out a harsh, broken laugh. A sound devoid of any humor.

"Go ahead," he interrupted smoothly, leaning back against the vinyl booth. "Tell them. Show the hospital board. Show the media. My license is already gone. My wife is divorcing me. I have nothing left to lose. But you? You're an intern with zero institutional protection, facing a formal ethics violation hearing for patient harassment and professional misconduct. Your medical license will be revoked before it even begins."
Khloe sat frozen, her latte growing cold in front of her, the reality of her shattered ambitions finally crashing down like an avalanche. She had hitched her wagon to a sinking ship, and now she was drowning right along with him.
