Chapter 7 - The Shocking Words of the Specialist

The air in the private recovery room seemed to freeze solid. Dererick lifted his head slowly from his hands, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Dr. Vance with a mixture of terror and fierce protectiveness.

"What do you mean?" Dererick asked, his voice shaking violently. "What did the specialist say?"

Dr. Vance pulled up a chair beside the bed and sat down, folding her hands in her lap. She looked directly at both of us, her expression grave and intense.

"When we performed the emergency ultrasound and subsequent scans during the C-section, we discovered something extraordinary," Dr. Vance explained, leaning forward. "The placenta didn't just separate because of the physical impact from the marble stand. Your body, Maya... your body had been fighting an underlying inflammatory condition for weeks—likely triggered by chronic, severe psychological stress and high cortisol levels."

I stared at her, confused. "Stress? From the pregnancy?"

"From toxic stress," Dr. Vance corrected gently. "The kind caused by prolonged emotional abuse, anxiety, and a hostile environment. Your immune system was compromised, which made the placenta far more vulnerable to physical trauma."

She paused, taking a breath before delivering the most critical part of her report.

"The specialist in the NICU ran a comprehensive neurological and genetic panel on your daughter after she stabilized. Because of the oxygen deprivation during the abruption, we were bracing ourselves for signs of severe cerebral ischemia or developmental delays."

Dr. Vance smiled—a small, radiant smile that cut through the heavy tension in the room.

"Instead, the panel revealed something incredible. Not only is her brain activity normal and healthy, showing zero signs of permanent neurological damage, but her genetic markers and resilience scores are off the charts. The specialist told us he has rarely seen an infant possess such a ferocious, stubborn will to survive. She fought her way through the trauma of that fall with a strength that defies medical explanation. She wanted to live, Maya. She fought for you just as much as you fought for her."

A sob broke from my throat, and Dererick pulled me into his arms as tightly as he dared, burying his face in my neck as we both wept tears of pure, unadulterated gratitude.

"Can I... can I see her?" I whispered against his shoulder.

"As soon as you're strong enough to sit in a wheelchair," Dr. Vance said, standing up and patting my arm. "The NICU nurses are taking wonderful care of her. Get some rest, parents. You have a very strong little girl waiting for you."
