Chapter 5 - The Operating Room and the First Cry

The operating room was freezing, smelling sharply of antiseptic, sterile metal, and iodine. Bright overhead surgical lamps beat down on my face like the midday sun, casting harsh shadows across the masked faces of the surgical staff hovering above me.
"Anesthesia is taking effect. Maya, you're going to feel a warm sensation in your chest, and then your lower half will go completely numb," Dr. Vance said, her voice calm, steady, and deeply reassuring.
A nurse gently squeezed my hand. "You're doing amazing, Maya. Just breathe."
My legs grew heavy, warm, and then completely detached from my consciousness, as if they no longer belonged to me. The crushing pressure in my lower abdomen began to lift slightly, replaced by a strange, hollow sensation of pulling and shifting.
"Scalpel," Dr. Vance requested.
I stared up at the polished metal reflection in the overhead surgical light, watching the distorted shapes of the doctors moving with terrifying, practiced speed. The seconds ticked by like hours. The silence in the room was heavy, punctuated only by the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor and the quiet murmur of medical instructions.
"Uterus is exposed," Dr. Vance announced quietly. her tone shifted slightly, a subtle tightening in her voice that sent a fresh wave of ice water through my veins. "There is significant hematoma formation. The placenta has begun to separate prematurely. We need to move fast."
My heart hammered against my ribs. Please God, I prayed silently, tears leaking from the corners of my eyes and pooling in my ears. Please let my baby be okay. Take whatever you want from me, but let my baby live.
"Suction, please."
"I'm in."
The next few moments felt suspended in time. The pulling sensation intensified, and then—breaking the tense, quiet atmosphere of the operating room—came a sound more beautiful than any music I had ever heard in my life.
A sharp, defiant, furious cry.

"It's a girl!" Dr. Vance announced, a triumphant smile breaking across her face above her blue mask. "Quick, clamp the cord! Let's get her to the warming table!"
A wave of overwhelming relief washed over me, so powerful and sudden that my vision blurred completely and the darkness finally pulled me under.
