Part 8: A New Beginning

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Minneapolis skyline in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep indigo. The city lights began to twinkle to life like a million scattered diamonds against the gathering dusk.

We had finished dinner—a chaotic masterpiece of burnt garlic bread and surprisingly decent homemade lasagna—and were now gathered around the dining table for our weekly family game night.

Sarah was currently sitting across from me, her brow furrowed in fierce concentration as she counted out her Monopoly money with the precision of a Wall Street executive.

"If you buy Boardwalk, Uncle Chris, I will literally bankrupt you by round three," she warned him, narrowing her eyes with theatrical seriousness.

Chris threw his hands up in mock surrender, laughing heartily. "All right, all right! Mercy! I yield to the ruthless real estate tycoon of the family!"

Megan and I exchanged amused glances across the table. The warmth in the room was palpable, a stark contrast to the freezing, terrifying darkness of the night this entire journey had begun. We had survived the worst life could throw at us, not by luck or coincidence, but by standing shoulder-to-shoulder when everything else fell apart.

Later that evening, after Chris and Megan packed up their car and drove back to their home across town, the house settled into a peaceful, comforting quiet.

I walked upstairs down the carpeted hallway to check on Sarah. The door to her bedroom was pushed open just a crack, letting a warm sliver of yellow light spill out onto the floor.

I pushed the door open softly. Sarah was already tucked under her covers, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit with one hand, her breathing slow and even in deep slumber. On her bedside table sat the repaired silver locket I had given her, shining brightly beneath the lamplight.

I walked over, gently pulled the quilt up over her shoulder, and kissed her forehead right above the faint, fading scar from that terrible night.

"I love you, bug," I whispered into the quiet room.

In her sleep, a tiny, peaceful smile touched the corners of her mouth, as if she knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that she was safe, protected, and fiercely loved.
