Chapter 9 - Light in the Darkness

BANG!

A deafening gunshot echoed through the garden house, shattering the quiet afternoon.

Outside on the lawn, Julian froze. The sound of a gunshot sent a wave of absolute horror through his veins. "Sophie, stay here!" Julian roared, shoving the puppy into his daughter's arms and running at full speed toward the garden house.

"Julian! Dad!" Sophie screamed, terrified.

Inside the garden house, smoke hung heavy in the air. Vivian lay on the ground, disarmed and stunned, after hitting her head hard against the stone edge of the workbench during the tackle.

A few feet away, Anna was slumped against the wooden display wall, her hands clutching her lower left side. Crimson blood was rapidly seeping through the fabric of her ivory dress. The bullet had caught her in the side during the struggle.

"Anna!" Julian crashed through the doors, his face pale with horror.

He saw Vivian groaning on the floor near the dropped revolver, but his eyes immediately locked onto his wife. He dropped to his knees beside Anna, pulling her into his arms, his hands frantically pressing down on her wound to stop the bleeding.

"Anna! Look at me! Stay with me!" Julian pleaded, his voice breaking into terrified sobs. "Help! Someone call an ambulance! NOW!"

The estate security guards burst into the room seconds later, quickly restraining Vivian on the ground and securing the firearm.

Anna looked up at Julian, her face pale, her breathing shallow and ragged. She reached up with a weak, trembling hand, touching his cheek. "Julian..." she whispered softly.

"Don't talk, saved your strength," Julian cried, tears streaming down his face as he pressed hard against the wound, his hands covered in her blood. "You're going to be okay. The ambulance is coming. Please, God, stay with me, Anna..."

"Is... is Sophie safe?" Anna managed to gasp out, her eyes searching his desperately.

"She's safe! She's outside, she's fine because of you!" Julian sobbed, kissing her forehead repeatedly. "You saved her, Anna. You saved us. Now you have to fight. I can't lose you. Sophie can't lose you. We need you, Anna!"

Anna smiled faintly, her vision blurring at the edges as darkness began to creep in. "I promised... I'd never leave her..."

Her hand slipped from his cheek, and her eyes closed as she fell unconscious in Julian's arms.

"ANNA!" Julian screamed, holding her tightly against his chest as the sirens wailed in the distance.

The emergency room waiting area at St. Jude's Memorial Hospital was suffocatingly quiet. It was the very same hospital where Eleanor had passed away two years prior, a cruel twist of fate that made every passing minute feel like an eternity for Julian.

For four agonizing hours, Julian sat in the waiting room, holding Sophie tightly in his lap. The little girl had cried until she had no tears left, her face buried in her father's chest, holding the small golden retriever puppy close.

Finally, the doors of the surgical unit swung open. The head surgeon, dressed in blue scrubs, stepped out, pulling off his mask.

Julian stood up immediately, his legs trembling. "Doctor... how is she?"

The surgeon looked at Julian's blood-stained shirt, then down at Sophie, and allowed a weary, relieved smile to break across his face.

"She is a extraordinarily tough woman, Mr. West," the surgeon announced. "The bullet missed her vital organs by less than an inch. We successfully repaired the arterial bleeding and removed the round. She is stable, breathing on her own, and resting comfortably in recovery."

Julian closed his eyes, a massive sob of relief escaping his chest. He dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms tightly around Sophie, both of them crying tears of overwhelming joy.

"Can we see her?" Sophie begged, looking at the doctor with wide, hopeful eyes.

"She's just waking up," the doctor smiled softly. "Follow me."

They walked down the quiet hallway, stopping outside room 304. Julian pushed the door open gently.

Anna was lying in the hospital bed, connected to a quiet heart monitor, an IV line hooked into her arm. Though she was pale and weak, her eyes were open, turning slowly toward the door as they entered.

"Sophie... Julian..." Anna croaked, her voice weak but warm.

Sophie ran to the side of the bed, being careful not to touch the wires, and gently laid her head against Anna's uninjured arm. "Mommy... you woke up."

Anna lifted her hand weakly, running her fingers through Sophie's hair. "I told you... I always keep my promises."

Julian walked to the other side of the bed, taking Anna's free hand and raising it to his lips, kissing her knuckles tenderly. "You almost died for us, Anna."

May you like

"I would do it a thousand times over," Anna whispered, her eyes shining with deep, unconditional love. "Because you two are my whole life."

Julian leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, their tears mingling in the soft, peaceful quiet of the hospital room. The darkness that had haunted the West family for years had finally been burned away by the light of a courage and love that nothing could ever destroy.
