Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Revenge

While the court victory secured Anna’s legal standing as Sophie’s mother, the sting of public humiliation drove Arthur and Vivian Vance to desperate measures. Losing thirty percent of their leverage over West Shipping, combined with the social mockery they faced in high-society circles, pushed Vivian over the edge of sanity.

A month after the trial, summer had arrived. The West estate was in full bloom, filled with white roses and vibrant hydrangeas. Julian had scaled back his workload immensely, appointing a trusted Chief Operating Officer so he could spend his weekends at home with his new family.

It was a warm Saturday afternoon. Julian had taken Sophie into town to pick out a puppy—a surprise gift for her eighth birthday. Anna remained at the estate, supervising the domestic staff and preparing a small family celebration in the garden.

At around 3:00 PM, a black sedan parked near the side gates of the estate—an area where the security cameras were undergoing routine maintenance.

Anna was in the garden house, setting up small string lights around the patio, when she heard footsteps behind her. Expecting one of the housekeepers, she turned around with a warm smile.

"Could you hand me those ribbons—"

Anna stopped mid-sentence. Standing in the shadow of the garden house doorway was Vivian Vance.

Vivian looked completely transformed from the pristine woman at the banquet. Her hair was unkempt, her eyes were bloodshot and sunken, and she wore a heavy trench coat despite the summer heat. In her right hand, she gripped a small silver revolver.

Anna’s blood ran cold. She slowly raised her hands, taking a step back until her back hit the wooden workbench.

"Vivian," Anna said smoothly, forcing her voice to remain calm despite the terror surging through her. "How did you get in here?"

"The back gate security guard used to work for my father's firm," Vivian sneered, her voice raspy and unhinged. "Money opens every door, Anna. You should know that... you little gold-digging thief."

"Vivian, put the gun down," Anna pleaded gently. "This isn't going to fix anything. If you hurt me, you will destroy your entire life."

"My life is already destroyed!" Vivian screamed, her hand shaking violently as she pointed the barrel directly at Anna’s chest. "My father’s firm lost its contract with West Shipping! My friends laugh behind my back! Every newspaper calls me the woman who was dumped for a maid! You took my husband! You took my future!"

"Julian never loved you, Vivian!" Anna said directly, holding her ground. "And you never loved Sophie! You wanted a title and a fortune. If you really cared about Julian, you wouldn't be doing this!"

"Shut up!" Vivian shrieked, taking two steps closer. "You think you won? You think you get to play happy family in this mansion while I am ruined? I am going to end you before Julian gets back. Let's see how much he loves you when you're gone!"

Outside in the driveway, the sound of a car engine echoed. Julian’s SUV had pulled up to the main entrance.

Sophie’s excited laughter echoed across the lawn as she ran toward the house, holding a golden retriever puppy in her arms. "Mommy! Look what Dad got me! Mommy, where are you?"

Inside the garden house, Anna’s heart dropped into her stomach. Sophie was running straight toward the garden.

Vivian turned her head toward the sound of Sophie's voice, a twisted smile spreading across her lips. "Oh, the little brat is back too. Perfect. She can watch her precious new mommy disappear just like her old one."

Vivian turned her head back toward Anna, raising the gun to pull the trigger.

Knowing that Sophie was only seconds away from walking through that door, Anna didn't hesitate. She didn't think about her own safety or the danger of the weapon. With a fierce, protective instinct, Anna lunged forward, throwing her entire weight into Vivian before the gun could go off.
