Chapter 4 - Midnight Promises

The living room fell into a quiet calm as the clock on the mantelpiece struck midnight. Christmas Day had officially arrived.

Noah had fallen back into a deep sleep, resting soundly in the crib Emily had set up in the corner of the room. Gavin sat in an armchair nearby, refusing to move more than a few feet away from the child. Emily brought two steaming mugs of tea into the room, handing one to Gavin before taking her seat on the couch opposite him.

"You need to sleep," Gavin said softly, taking a sip of the warm liquid. "You look exhausted, Em."

"I haven't slept more than three hours a night since he was born," she admitted, rubbing her temples. "Between nursing, taking care of the house, and constantly watching the street for Arthur's men... I felt like I was losing my mind."

Gavin felt a deep ache in his chest. While he had been brooding in his luxury penthouse, drinking expensive scotch and feeling sorry for himself, Emily had been fighting a nightmare entirely alone.

"Tomorrow morning, my security team is taking over this house," Gavin said, his tone firm but non-threatening. "My head of security, Marcus, is a former Special Forces operator. He will place four men on this perimeter. No one gets within a block of you or Noah without my personal authorization."

"Gavin, Arthur said—"

"Arthur is playing a game he doesn't understand," Gavin interrupted, his eyes gleaming with a lethal clarity. "He thinks I'm a man who will panic when backed into a corner. He forgets who built Rowan Technologies from a garage startup into a forty-billion-dollar enterprise. He thinks he can threaten my family? I will tear his life apart piece by piece."

"I don't want a war, Gavin," Emily said quietly, her voice trembling. "I just want Noah to grow up safe. I want a normal life."

Gavin leaned forward, placing his mug on the table and looking directly into Emily's eyes. "I know. And I promise you, you will have it. But to give you that life, I have to finish this once and for all. Arthur thinks he has twenty-four hours. I’m going to end him in twelve."

"What are you going to do?"

"Arthur mentioned medical records from Vancouver," Gavin explained, his mind racing through the logic of the situation. "That means he committed corporate espionage and violated international privacy laws to get them. He also used extortion—a federal crime. He thinks because he has friends on the board, he's safe. But he made one crucial error."

"What error?"

"He came here tonight," Gavin smiled faintly, though his eyes remained stern. "My Aston Martin is equipped with an encrypted, continuous 360-degree audio and visual recording system for personal security. It was parked right in front of your porch. Every word Arthur said—his threats, his blackmail demands, his admission of tracking your medical files—was captured in high-definition audio and video."

Emily’s eyes widened in realization. "You recorded him?"

"I record everything," Gavin said softly. "It’s a habit born of paranoia, but tonight, it’s going to save our family."

Emily looked at Gavin, seeing a glimpse of the brilliant, calculating man she had fallen in love with in college—the man who always found a way through impossible odds. But this time, that intelligence wasn't being used to chase a profit margin. It was being used to protect her and their son.

"Thank you, Gavin," she whispered gently.

Gavin shook his head. "Don't thank me yet, Em. The night is young, and we have a long way to go before this is over."
