Chapter 5 - The War Begins

I stood at the edge of the lobby, feeling a cold, dark fury rise inside me. I didn't run. I didn't hide. I walked straight toward her until I was standing just a few feet away, separated only by the security barrier and the stern police officer guarding it.
"What are you doing here, Evelyn?" I asked, my voice devoid of any warmth or emotion.
"What am I doing here?!" she demanded, throwing her hands up. "I came to stop you from making the biggest mistake of your life! Do you realize the police showed up at my house at three in the morning with a warrant?! They treated me like a criminal! Me! Your mother!"
"You are a criminal," I said coldly.
One of the men in expensive suits stepped forward, smoothing his tie. "Mr. Miller, my name is Arthur Pendelton, senior counsel representing your mother. We strongly advise you to drop these baseless accusations before this damages your family's reputation permanently. Accidents happen during pregnancy. Missteps occur. Making wildly exaggerated claims of physical assault against your own mother will only lead to severe legal repercussions for you and your wife."
I looked at the attorney, then turned my gaze back to my mother.
"She pushed Megan down the stairs, Pendelton," I said, staring into my mother's eyes. "She fractured her leg, broke her toes, and caused a placental abruption that forced an emergency C-section at thirty-one weeks. My son is in an incubator upstairs fighting for his life right now because of her."
Evelyn's eyes flickered, but her arrogance did not waver. "The child lived, didn't he? So no real harm was done! You are overreacting, Jake! She dropped down those stairs because she wasn't paying attention! I merely tried to protect you from being burdened with a woman who can't even walk down a flight of steps!"
"You tried to kill my child!" I roared, slamming my palm against the metal barrier post. The sudden sound echoed like a gunshot through the lobby, making several bystanders turn and stare. "You pushed her because you couldn't control me anymore! You wanted her to lose the baby so you could keep playing the victim!"
"Jake, control yourself!" Evelyn hissed, her cheeks flushing red with embarrassment. "You are embarrassing me!"
"I don't care about your embarrassment!" I snapped. "I care about justice. You thought you could scare Megan into staying quiet, but it's over, Evelyn. The police have her medical records. They have the photos of her injuries. They have my statement and her statement."
"Statements mean nothing without physical evidence!" Pendelton interjected smoothly. "It is her word against Mrs. Miller's. There were no witnesses in that basement."
"That's where you're wrong," a calm, firm voice spoke up from behind me.
We all turned. Detective Thomas was walking across the lobby, holding a thick manila folder. Behind her were two uniform officers holding handcuffs.
"Mrs. Evelyn Miller?" Detective Thomas asked, stopping right in front of the barrier.
"Yes?" Evelyn replied haughtily. "What is the meaning of this?"
"You are under arrest for aggravated battery resulting in severe bodily harm, attempted murder, and witness intimidation," Detective Thomas said calmly.
Pendelton stepped in front of her. "Detective, this is absurd! There is no physical evidence tying my client to a push—"
"Actually, counselor, there is," Detective Thomas interrupted, opening the file folder. "Our forensics team executed a search warrant on Mrs. Miller's residence four hours ago. We inspected the basement staircase. We recovered three distinct fibers caught in the splintered wood near the top landing—fibers that match the sweater Megan was wearing the day of the incident. Furthermore, we found clear handprints in the dust on the wall where Megan tried to catch herself, along with a pair of bruised leather gloves in Mrs. Miller's trash can that contained traces of Megan's blood."
Evelyn's face drained of all color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
"In addition," Detective Thomas added with a sharp smile, "we reviewed security footage from the neighbor's Ring camera across the street. It shows Mrs. Miller physically dragging Megan out of the house into her vehicle while Megan was clearly crying and unable to put weight on her right leg."
The room went dead silent.
Pendelton shut his mouth instantly, his legal arguments collapsing in a single breath.
Detective Thomas stepped past the barrier and snapped the steel handcuffs around Evelyn's manicured wrists.
"Evelyn Miller, you have the right to remain silent..."
"Jake!" Evelyn shrieked, struggling against the cuffs as the officers turned her around. "Jake! Tell them to stop! You can't let them do this to your mother! I did it for you! I did it for your own good!"
I stood there, motionless, watching as my mother was led away through the glass sliding doors of the hospital. She was screaming my name, her expensive coat dragging on the ground, her polished facade completely shattered.

I didn't feel joy. I didn't feel triumph. I felt a deep, profound sadness for the boy I used to be who had loved that woman. But as I turned around and walked toward the elevators to go back up to my wife and son, that sadness turned into an unshakeable strength.
The fight was just beginning, but I was going to make sure my real family was protected forever.
