Chapter 4 - The Web of Betrayal

Sitting in a small conference room near the ER, I gave Detective Thomas and Detective Miller a detailed, grueling account of everything that had transpired.
I told them about my mother’s obsessive need for control, her long-standing disdain for Megan, her unannounced visits, and the poison she had dripped into my ears. I gave them the exact timeline: Megan’s sudden confinement to bed two weeks ago, her terror whenever my mother was mentioned, and the terrifying confrontation that had just unfolded in our bedroom hours before.
"She admitted it to my face," I told the detectives, my hands trembling as I gripped the paper water cup they had given me. "She stood in our bedroom and said she shoved Megan down the basement stairs to make her lose the baby. She said she wanted to 'save' me from her."
Detective Thomas, a stern woman with grey-streaked hair, noted down every word. "And you said your mother threatened your wife if she spoke out?"
"Yes," I replied bitterly. "She told Megan she would use her wealth and influence to spin the story, frame Megan as an abusive, mentally unstable mother, and take the baby away through Child Services. Megan was isolated, broken, in excruciating pain, and terrified for our child's life. She thought keeping silent was the only way to protect our baby until he was born."
nearby, Detective Miller leaned forward. "Does your mother have access to your home, Mr. Miller?"
"She had a spare key," I said, pulling the brass key off my keyring and slapping it onto the table. "Not anymore. I want her arrested. I want her behind bars for what she did to my wife and my son."
"We are opening a formal investigation into aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, felony domestic abuse, and attempted murder," Detective Thomas said grimly. "Given the severity of the victim's injuries and the medical documentation from Dr. Vance, we have more than enough probable cause to secure an arrest warrant. We'll be heading to your mother's residence tonight."
After signing my statement, I hurried to the recovery unit.
When I entered Megan’s room, the soft, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound filling the dim space. She lay in the high-backed hospital bed, an IV line taped to her wrist, her pale face framed by her dark hair. Her right leg was wrapped tightly in a thick, white fiberglass cast, elevated on pillows.
I walked over softly, trying not to disturb her, but as soon as my shadow fell over the bed, her eyes fluttered open.
"Jake..." she breathed out, her voice barely a whisper.
"I'm here, baby," I murmured, pulling a chair right to the side of her bed. I reached out and gently took her frail hand in mine, kissing her knuckles over and over again. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
Tears trickled down her pale cheeks. "Our baby... is he...?"
"He's alive, Meg," I smiled through my tears. "He's in the NICU right now. He's small, but the doctors said he's a fighter. He has your nose."
A small, trembling breath escaped her lips, and for the first time in two nightmare weeks, I saw a flicker of relief cross my wife's face.
"I was so scared, Jake," she wept softly, squeezing my hand with what little strength she had. "When she pushed me down those stairs... the noise of my bone cracking... and then she stood at the top of the stairs, looking down at me like I was trash. She told me if I told you, she would destroy us. She said you would believe her over me..."
"I know, my love. I know," I sobbed, resting my forehead against her hand. "I am so, so sorry. I failed you. I should have seen the red flags years ago. I should never have let her near our lives."
"You didn't know," Megan whispered gently, using her thumb to brush away my tears. "She was your mother... no one wants to believe their own mother is capable of something so evil."
"She isn't my mother anymore," I said firmly, looking straight into Megan's eyes. "She is a monster who hurt the two people I love most in this world. She will never touch you, touch our son, or come near our family ever again. I swear that to you on my life."
We held each other in the dim light of the hospital room, crying for the pain we had suffered, but finding a tiny kernel of hope in the fact that the truth was finally out in the open.
However, our nightmare was far from over.
The next morning, while Megan was sleeping under the effect of heavy pain medication, I went down to the hospital cafeteria to grab a black coffee. As I walked through the main lobby, I froze.
Standing by the security desk, dressed in an expensive camel-hair coat, surrounded by two high-priced defense attorneys, was Evelyn.
She wasn't weeping. She didn't look remorseful. She looked furious, holding a leather handbag, talking sharply to an officer who was keeping her behind the velvet security ropes.

As I stepped out of the elevator, her eyes locked onto mine.
"Jake!" she called out loudly, her voice echoing across the marble lobby. "Jake, tell these people to step aside right now! This ridiculous misunderstanding has gone far enough!"
