Chapter 9 - A New Horizon

Six months after the trial concluded, my consultancy, Veritas Financial Investigations, was fully operational. We had taken on four major cases pro bono, helping individuals who, like my past self, had been systematically gaslit, financially trapped, and legally silenced by powerful spouses or corporate entities.

Sitting at my custom walnut desk in my sunlit downtown office, I reviewed a fresh stack of encrypted financial files sent over by a local women’s shelter. The patterns of hidden assets and suppressed bank statements were painfully familiar, but this time, I wasn't just analyzing data in secret. I was arming others with the tools they needed to break free.

The heavy oak door of my private office opened softly, and my new senior assistant, a sharp young forensic analyst named Maya, stepped in with a steaming mug of black coffee.

“Your 2:00 PM consultation is here, Clara,” Maya said, her eyes bright with professional enthusiasm. “It’s Detective Ramirez. She said it’s strictly social, but she brought a stack of case files anyway.”

I laughed, setting my pen down. “Send her in, Maya.”

A moment later, Detective Ramirez walked into the office, wearing a sharp charcoal blazer instead of her usual trench coat. She dropped a thick folder onto my desk with a satisfying thud.

“Not a case file, for once,” Ramirez said, sinking into one of the leather armchairs opposite my desk. “Just a collaborative referral from the precinct’s white-collar division. They want to know if Veritas is available to consult on a state-level asset recovery project.”

I opened the folder, scanning the introductory summary. A genuine smile spread across my face. “It looks like a fascinating puzzle, Detective. I’d be honored to take a look.”

“I knew you would,” Ramirez said, leaning back and sipping her water. “You know, Clara, watching you take down the Mercer empire from the inside out was the most satisfying thing I’ve witnessed in twenty years on the force. You turned twelve years of silence into the ultimate masterclass in forensic recovery.”

“I didn't do it alone,” I replied, looking around my bright, independent office, then back at the woman who had trusted me from the very first moment in that clinic exam room. “I had good backup.”

“So, what’s next for the great auditor?” Ramirez asked, her eyes twinkling with amusement. “Are you ever going to take a vacation, or are you just going to audit the entire state of New York one ledger at a time?”

May you like

“A little bit of both,” I said, standing up and walking over to the large floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the bustling streets below. The sunlight warmed my face, bright and uninterrupted. “I’m taking a trip to the coast next weekend. No spreadsheets, no encrypted backups, and absolutely no bug specimens.”

Ramirez laughed, raising her glass in a silent toast. “You’ve earned every single second of it, Clara. Enjoy the view.”
