Chapter 10 - The Final Audit

The weekend getaway to the coast was everything I had dreamed of. For three full days, I listened to the rhythmic crashing of the ocean waves against the rocky shore, breathed in the salty sea air, and felt the last lingering ghosts of my past dissolve into the horizon. There were no hidden cameras, no locked basement doors, and no whispered threats from manipulative in-laws. There was only peace, clarity, and an unshakable sense of self-worth.

When I returned to the city on Sunday evening, my mind was sharp, focused, and entirely at peace.

I unlocked the door to my penthouse apartment, dropping my travel bag by the entryway. The apartment was quiet, warm, and filled with the soft ambient light of the city below. I walked over to the kitchen, poured myself a glass of sparkling water, and stepped out onto the balcony.

The stars twinkled brightly against the deep indigo canvas of the night sky.

I pulled out my phone and opened my encrypted cloud vault—not to check evidence or review shell companies, but simply to archive my travel receipts. As the system loaded, I noticed a final notification waiting in my secure inbox. It was an official automated dispatch from the federal receiver’s office confirming the permanent closure and dissolution of all remaining Mercer family trusts, with full asset liquidation transferred and finalized in my name.

The chapter was officially closed. The audit was complete. The books of my life were finally, beautifully balanced.

I smiled into the cool night air, raised my glass toward the sprawling skyline, and whispered softly to myself:

“Case closed.”
