Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Shadows

With hands that shook violently, I reached up and turned the heavy steel wheel, unlocking the safe room door.

As the door swung open, Roman stood before me. His tailored suit jacket was gone, his white dress shirt torn and stained with dirt and crimson blood. In his right hand, he held a heavy pistol, smoke still rising faintly from the barrel. His eyes were wild, consumed by adrenaline and fury—until his gaze landed on Lily and me.

Instantly, the violent fire in his eyes softened. He dropped the gun onto the floor, stepped into the room, and pulled both of us into his arms.

I buried my face in his shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably. He held us tight, his heart hammering against my cheek, his breath ragged. "You're safe," he rasped, his voice thick with emotion, kissing the side of my head over and over. "You're safe. I'm sorry... I'm so sorry I wasn't here when they came."

"You came back," I sobbed, wrapping my arms around his waist, ignoring the metallic smell of blood on his shirt. "You came back for us."

"I will always come back," Roman swore softly, his grip tightening around us.

Behind him, Marcus walked into the hallway, wounded but alive, signaling that the house was secure. Dominic Moretti and his men had been neutralized or captured; the threat to the estate was crushed.

An hour later, after the medical team had treated Roman's minor injuries and the police—who were firmly under Callahan control—had cleared the estate, Roman sat with me in the small sunroom. Lily was sound asleep in her bassinet, exhausted from the night's terror.

Roman sat beside me on the couch, wrapped in a dark bandage around his shoulder, drinking a glass of scotch. On the table between us sat a heavy, rusted metal box that he had retrieved from the cabin in Lake Geneva.

"Is that... the ledger?" I asked quietly, looking at the box.

"Yes," Roman replied, his voice heavy. "It contains everything. The Morettis are finished. By tomorrow morning, federal warrants will be issued for every remaining member of their syndicate. They will never harm anyone ever again."

He unlocked the metal box with a small key and opened the lid. Inside lay several thick, leather-bound books filled with dates, names, and transactions. But beneath the books lay something else—a small, sealed envelope with my name written on it in Caleb's handwriting.

My breath hitched. "Roman..."

Roman looked at the envelope, then reached down and picked it up, handing it to me with a solemn expression. "I found this inside the box. He left it for you."

My hands trembled as I took the envelope. I broke the wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of yellowed paper.

Dearest Nora,

If you are reading this, it means Roman found my stash and brought you to safety. I am so sorry, Nora. I am sorry for leaving you, for missing the birth of our little girl, for making you think I didn't care.

The moment you told me you were pregnant, I knew I couldn't let our child grow up in the shadows of the Callahan-Moretti war. I tried to buy my freedom by stealing the Moretti ledgers, but they found out. If I stayed with you, they would have used you as a shield.

I had to make myself a target to keep the crosshairs off your back. I am going into hiding, taking a path where no one can follow. Do not look for me, Nora. Protect our baby.

If Roman is the one giving you this, trust him. He is the best man I know, even if he doesn't believe it himself. He will be the father to our child that I could never be.

Love always,

Caleb.

Tears filled my eyes as I finished reading the letter. The heavy weight of bitterness that I had carried in my heart for seventeen months finally washed away, replaced by a deep, aching peace. Caleb hadn't abandoned us out of fear; he had sacrificed his entire life to ensure our survival.

I looked up at Roman, who was watching me with a look of profound respect and quiet sadness.

"Did you find anything else at the cabin?" I asked gently.

Roman hesitated, looking down at his glass. "A cell phone," he admitted softly. "Encrypted. It received a single ping six hours ago from an untraceable server in South America."

May you like

I caught my breath. "He's alive."

Roman met my gaze, a gentle, bittersweet smile touching his lips. "He's alive, Nora. He's safe, but he can never come back to Chicago. He chose a new life in the shadows so that you and Lily could have a real life in the light."
