Chapter 5 - The Siege of Lake Forest

The night Roman left for Lake Geneva was the longest night of my life. Snow fell heavily outside, blanketing the estate in an eerie, quiet white. The house felt hollow without Roman's presence, the vast corridors ringing with an uncomfortable silence.

I stayed in the nursery, pacing the floor with Lily in my arms. Marcus and six armed guards were stationed around the perimeter of the mansion, but an unsettling feeling of impending dread tightened around my chest.

At 2:00 AM, the lights in the estate suddenly flickered and died, plunging the entire house into pitch blackness.

Lily let out a startled cry. My heart hammered against my ribs. Seconds later, the emergency red backup lights kicked on, casting long, crimson shadows across the walls.

Suddenly, the muted thump-thump-thump of silenced gunfire echoed from the lower floor, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor.

"Marcus!" I screamed, pulling Lily tightly against my chest and backing away toward the corner of the room.

The nursery door burst open. I gasped, but it was Marcus, his face covered in sweat, a handgun drawn in his right hand. A streak of blood was smeared across his tactical vest.

"Nora, get into the safe room! Now!" he barked, pulling open a hidden panel in the bookshelf behind Roman's desk. "They cut the power lines and jammed our coms. It’s a coordinated hit—the Morettis!"

"How did they find us?!" I cried as he shoved me into the small, reinforced steel room hidden behind the wall.

"Someone tipped them off about Roman leaving!" Marcus yelled over the sound of breaking glass from downstairs. "Listen to me: stay inside, lock the door from the wheel, and DO NOT open it for anyone except Roman or me!"

Before I could answer, Marcus slammed the reinforced steel door shut. I heard the heavy mechanical deadbolts click into place, sealing us inside.

The safe room was small, lit by an overhead strip light, equipped with a monitor displaying security feeds from around the house. I sat on the floor, holding Lily, who was sobbing softly against my shoulder. I rocked her frantically, whispering soft lullabies to drown out the muffled sounds of chaos outside.

On the security monitor, I watched in terror as masked men in tactical gear moved through the grand hallways downstairs. My heart stopped when I saw the lead figure—a tall, brutal-looking man with a scarred face whom I recognized from news reports as Dominic Moretti, the ruthless head of the rival crime family.

"Search every room!" Dominic’s voice boomed through the security microphone system. "Find Callahan’s bastard niece! If we have the child, Roman gives us the ledgers, or we burn his empire to the ground!"

Tears spilled down my cheeks as I squeezed my eyes shut, holding Lily as close as I could without hurting her. They knew. Somehow, they had found out about Lily.

Suddenly, the security screen flickered. The camera watching the hallway outside the nursery was blown apart by a gunshot, plunging the monitor into static.

Seconds later, heavy pounding echoed against the steel door of our safe room.

"Open up, little girl!" Dominic’s muffled voice taunted from the other side. "You're trapped! Roman isn't here to save you!"

I pressed my back against the far wall, clutching Lily, my breathing shallow and ragged. I prayed with every fiber of my soul, praying for a miracle, praying for the one man who had promised to protect us.

Then, through the heavy steel door, I heard the sudden, thundering roar of an unsuppressed shotgun, followed by shouts of panic and the chaotic spray of automatic gunfire.

"He's back! Callahan is here!" someone screamed outside.

A brutal, violent struggle ensued in the hallway. Screams, breaking wood, and gunshots echoed through the metal frame of the safe room. I held my breath, clutching Lily tightly, afraid to make a sound.

After what felt like an eternity, the gunfire abruptly ceased.

A heavy silence descended over the house.

For two agonizing minutes, nothing happened. My heart pounded so hard I thought it would burst through my ribs.

Then, came a soft, heavy knock on the steel door. Three slow taps, followed by two fast ones.

"Nora," a voice called out—rough, winded, and bleeding with raw emotion. "It’s Roman. It’s over. Open the door."
