Chapter 4 - The Collapse of Illusion

Back in the city, Julian's world was spinning out of orbit at a terrifying speed.
After slamming his phone down, he had tried to access his online banking portal. The screen flashed a bright, mocking crimson: ACCESS DENIED - ACCOUNT FROZEN BY COURT ORDER.
Frantic, he grabbed his car keys and drove straight to his corporate headquarters downtown. He parked illegally in his reserved executive spot, burst through the revolving glass doors, and marched toward the private elevators.
"Mr. Blackwood! Sir, you can't go up there!" the young receptionist at the front desk stammered, leaping to her feet.
Julian didn't even look back. "Shut up, Linda. I own this building."
"Not anymore, you don't," a calm, familiar voice echoed across the marble lobby.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks and spun around. Standing near the elevators was Arthur Sterling, the founding partner of Blackwood Enterprises and Julian’s former mentor. Arthur looked older, his face etched with profound disappointment as he adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses.
"Arthur," Julian breathed, rushing forward. "Thank God you're here. Some rogue attorneys and my ungrateful wife have staged a coup. They've frozen my personal accounts, locked me out of my own home, and—"
"Quiet, Julian," Arthur interrupted, holding up a single hand. The authority in his voice made Julian snap his mouth shut. "I called an emergency board meeting forty-five minutes ago. The board has voted unanimously to strip you of your CEO title, revoke your voting shares, and initiate an internal forensic audit regarding the missing five million dollars from the European expansion fund."
Julian staggered backward, his face turning an ash-grey color. "Missing... what? That money was reinvested! I have the paperwork right here in my—"
"In your briefcase, which contains forged signatures and shell company receipts?" Arthur finished for him, shaking his head slowly. "Elena brought the complete, unadulterated financial records to the board yesterday afternoon. Every offshore transfer, every hotel bill charged to corporate expenses for your personal escapades with Miss Isabel Vance, and every tax evasion scheme you cooked up over the last three years."
"Isabel?" Julian choked out, the name slipping past his lips like poison. "What does Isabel have to do with this?"
"Isabel was questioned by federal investigators an hour ago," Arthur said coldly. "Turns out, when federal agents offered her immunity in exchange for forwarding every text message where you bragged about cooking the books, she didn't hesitate for a single second. She threw you under the bus, Julian. She packed her bags and boarded a flight to Miami before you even woke up in Aspen."
The room seemed to tilt sideways. Julian grabbed the marble reception desk to steady himself, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps. The invincible Julian Blackwood—the man who controlled markets, manipulated people, and treated everyone around him like disposable chess pieces—was suddenly standing in the wreckage of his own design, entirely stripped of power.
"Why?" Julian whispered, staring blankly at the floor. "Why did she do this? I gave her everything."

"You gave her a gilded cage and expected her to stay quiet while you spat on her dignity," Arthur said quietly, turning toward the elevator. "You forgot one fundamental rule of business, Julian: never underestimate someone who has nothing left to lose. Security will escort you off the premises now."
Two burly security guards in dark suits stepped out from behind the pillar, their expressions completely neutral as they walked toward him.
