Chapter 2 - The Voice of the Law

The phone buzzed against the mahogany desk, its sharp vibration cutting through the eerie stillness of the empty house. Julian stared at the caller ID, his thumb hovering over the screen before he finally pressed accept.

"Marcus," Julian's voice was tight, dangerously controlled. "What is the meaning of this? Where is my wife? Where is my son?"

On the other end of the line, Marcus Vance—senior partner at Vance & Associates and the most ruthless family law attorney in the city—let out a slow, deliberate breath.

"Good morning, Julian. I trust your imaginary flight from Tokyo was smooth," Marcus said, his tone dripping with formal polite disdain. "To answer your questions: Elena is safe, and Harrison is with her. As for your current location, you are standing in a house that no longer legally belongs solely to you."

Julian gripped the phone so hard his knuckles turned white. "Stop playing games with me, Marcus. Elena doesn't make a move without me. She is a stay-at-home mother, she has no independent income, and she wouldn't dare pull a stunt like this. Tell me where they are right now, or I will have you disbarred before noon."

A low, rich chuckle echoed through the receiver. "Threats, Julian? That's always your default setting when you realize you're losing control. Let me enlighten you on a few facts. First, you're not dealing with the naive twenty-two-year-old art student you married five years ago. Second, take a look inside that cream-colored envelope on your desk. It contains copies of the initial filing for divorce, asset freezing orders, and a restraining order preventing you from coming within five hundred feet of Elena or Harrison."

Julian ripped the envelope open, his eyes scanning the formal legal jargon. Pages of documents spilled across the wood.

"This is ridiculous!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking slightly. "Adultery isn't grounds for stripping a man of his home and child! I built Blackwood Enterprises! Everything I own is protected!"

"Was protected," Marcus corrected smoothly. "Allow me to remind you of the prenuptial agreement you forced Elena to sign before your wedding. Specifically, Section 14, Paragraph C: In the event of documented, premeditated infidelity resulting in the emotional abandonment of the household, all joint real estate holdings revert immediately to the injured party. Furthermore, over the last six months, Elena has systematically exercised her rights under your corporate partnership agreement. She owns fifty percent of the non-voting shares of Blackwood Enterprises, transferred quietly through legal restructuring approved by your own corporate counsel back in November."

Julian stumbled backward, his hip hitting the edge of the bookshelf. "That's... that's impossible. My corporate counsel wouldn't sign off on that without my knowledge."

"Your corporate counsel works for the firm that handles both personal and business accounts," Marcus replied calmly. "And when Elena presented incontrovertible proof of your offshore accounts, your corporate credit card charges at the Aspen Grand Hotel, and your repeated falsification of business travel logs... well, let's just say your lawyer decided his fiduciary duty lay with protecting the corporation from your catastrophic liability. You're broke, Julian. Your personal accounts were frozen at midnight. Your corporate credit cards have been declined as of forty minutes ago. And your home is currently undergoing a title transfer."

"You lying bastard!" Julian roared, slamming his fist against the wall. "I'll fight this! I'll contest every single clause! I'll ruin you and I'll bury Elena so deep she'll never see our son again!"

"You're welcome to try," Marcus said softly, his voice dropping an octave into chilling professionalism. "Though it's difficult to litigate when you're facing federal charges for corporate embezzlement and tax evasion. Happy holidays, Julian."

The line went dead.

Julian stood frozen in the center of the silent office, the phone still pressed to his ear, listening to the hollow dial tone as his carefully constructed empire began to crumble around him.
