Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Dominic Vance

While Clara focused entirely on healing Leo’s emotional wounds within the sanctuary of the Aspen Ridge estate, the outside world was rapidly closing in on Dominic Vance.
Dominic had spent the last forty-eight hours crashing at a cheap downtown motel, desperately trying to contact his corporate associates, banking partners, and legal representation. But everywhere he turned, doors were slammed in his face.
Julian Vance had moved with terrifying efficiency.
By Tuesday afternoon, a special emergency board meeting of Sterling Investments was called. Clara, sitting at the head of the mahogany boardroom table via secure video link from her home office, watched as Dominic stumbled through the double doors, looking disheveled, unshaven, and frantic.
“This meeting is completely illegal!” Dominic shouted, slamming his briefcase onto the table. “I am the managing director of this firm! You cannot hold a vote without my formal consent!”
The senior board members sat in stony silence, refusing to look him in the eye.
Julian Vance stood up from his seat beside the projector screen, clicking a remote. A massive financial spreadsheet flashed onto the projector wall, detailing unauthorized corporate withdrawals, offshore shell companies, and fraudulent expense reports.
“Sit down, Dominic,” Julian said coldly. “You are no longer the managing director of this firm. In fact, you are no longer an employee.”
Dominic’s face turned pale. He lunged toward the table. “You can’t do that! I built this firm alongside Clara! I have equity!”
“You have fraudulent debt,” Julian interrupted, tossing a thick folder onto the table in front of Dominic. “Our forensic audit revealed that over the past twenty-four months, while Clara was in Singapore securing multi-million-dollar international contracts, you systematically funneled over eight hundred thousand dollars in corporate capital into personal accounts—funds that were subsequently used to support Brooke Thorne and her lifestyle.”
A murmur rippled through the boardroom. Several senior executives shook their heads in utter disgust.
“That’s… that’s a lie!” Dominic stammered, sweat beading on his forehead. “Brooke was just an assistant! She helped with administrative tasks!”
“An assistant who was paid a senior executive salary and provided with a corporate-leased luxury condo?” Julian raised an eyebrow, clicking to the next slide, which showed signed lease agreements and bank wire transfers bearing Dominic’s signature. “Federal investigators have already been notified of these transactions. Wire fraud, embezzlement, and corporate breach of fiduciary duty carry a combined prison sentence of up to fifteen years.”
Dominic staggered backward, gripping the edge of a chair to keep from falling. All the arrogance, all the false charm that had once made him seem successful and untouchable, had completely evaporated. He looked like a cornered animal.
“Clara…” Dominic choked out, staring directly into the camera lens at the front of the room where Clara’s live video feed was displayed on the massive monitor. “Clara, please. You know me. We have a history. We have a family. Don’t do this. Let’s talk. Please drop the charges. Let’s settle this privately.”
On the screen, Clara looked down at him. Her expression was not filled with rage, nor with satisfaction—it was completely empty of emotion. She looked at him the way a scientist might look at a failed experiment.
“Dominic,” Clara said, her voice calm, clear, and utterly devastating across the boardroom speakers. “When I was working eighty-hour weeks in Singapore, sacrificing my sleep, my health, and precious moments with my son, I did it because I believed we were building a secure future together. You chose to betray that trust. You chose to bring another woman into my home, and worse, you allowed your mother to push my son into the shadows.”
She paused, leaning slightly toward the microphone.
“You didn’t just break our marriage vows, Dominic. You threatened my child’s well-being. And for that, there is no negotiation, no settlement, and no forgiveness. You reap what you sow.”
With a single click of her mouse, Clara ended her video feed. The massive screen went black.

Julian turned back to Dominic, gesturing toward the doors where two building security guards stood waiting.
“Get out, Dominic,” Julian said flatly. “And don’t bother calling my office again unless it’s through your court-appointed public defender.”
