Chapter 3 - The Tables Turn

The atmosphere in the grand Aspen Ridge living room shifted from tense domestic drama to a chilling, calculated corporate takeover. The presence of Julian Vance—a legendary attorney known across the state for destroying high-net-worth individuals in divorce and fraud settlements—sent a visible shiver through Victoria and Dominic.

“Julian?” Victoria stammered, her regal composure finally cracking at the edges. “What is the meaning of this? You represent the family trust, not a personal divorce court! Get these men out of my house immediately!”

Julian did not even spare Victoria a glance. He walked past her as if she were a piece of antique furniture, stopping just two feet from Dominic. He opened his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of heavy-stock paper bound with a red ribbon, and held it out.

“Victoria, your delusions of grandeur have lasted long enough,” Julian said smoothly, his voice carrying an icy authority. “Clara is the sole trustee and principal beneficiary of the Sterling Estate. This property, along with every asset Dominic currently manages, is protected under an ironclad prenuptial agreement and an absolute asset-protection trust. You have no legal standing in this house.”

Brooke clutched Liam tightly, her face pale. She stood up from the designer sofa, trying to regain a shred of dignity. “This is ridiculous! I am a resident here. I have rights as well. You can’t just—this is a private matter!”

Julian finally turned his gaze toward Brooke, raising an eyebrow. “Ah, Ms. Brooke Thorne. Assistant, companion, and unofficial homemaker.” He reached into his briefcase again, pulling out a much thinner folder. “We have been reviewing the corporate expenditure reports of Sterling Investments over the last eighteen months. It appears that company funds were used to lease a luxury condo downtown, purchase a luxury European sedan, and cover multiple high-end retail sprees—all registered under your name, funded through corporate accounts without board approval.”

Brooke gasped, her hands shaking. She looked desperately at Dominic. “Dominic, you said those accounts were fine! You said you had authority to handle corporate perks!”

Dominic looked like a man standing on the edge of a collapsing cliff. He couldn’t look at Brooke, nor could he look at his mother. His eyes darted nervously toward Clara, who was currently lifting Leo gently into her arms.

Leo buried his face in Clara’s neck, finally feeling safe. Clara whispered soothingly into his hair, completely ignoring the chaos unfolding around her.

“Dominic,” Julian continued, his tone turning razor-sharp. “Embezzlement of corporate funds, corporate espionage, and marital abandonment combined with adultery. We have digital forensic records of every message, every transaction, and every security camera log from this estate. You have forty-eight hours to clear your personal belongings out of this house, or you will be forcibly removed by local law enforcement.”

The police officer standing near the doorway stepped forward slightly, resting his hand on his utility belt to emphasize the point.

“You can’t do this!” Victoria shrieked, lunging forward with a finger pointed squarely at Clara. “Clara! You cold-hearted bitch! You’re destroying your own family over a petty jealousy! Dominic is your husband! He made mistakes, but families forgive! You can’t throw him out on the street like a common criminal!”

Clara slowly turned around, carrying Leo in her arms. She looked down at her mother-in-law with an expression of profound pity and absolute disgust.

“Family?” Clara’s voice echoed coldly through the high-ceilinged room. “Victoria, the moment you allowed another woman to take my place, the moment you neglected my son and crowned a stranger’s child as the ‘pride of this house,’ any claim you had to this family vanished into thin air. You didn’t want a daughter-in-law; you wanted a silent financier who would fund your lavish lifestyle while you and your son plotted to push my child out of his own home.”

She shifted Leo slightly, resting his head against her shoulder.

“Julian,” Clara instructed calmly. “Have the locks changed immediately. Escort Ms. Thorne and her child off the premises. As for Dominic and Victoria, give them until sunrise to pack their bags. If they take a single item that belongs to the Sterling estate, have them arrested for theft.”

“Understood, Clara,” Julian nodded respectfully.

Dominic collapsed onto the edge of the sofa, burying his face in his hands as reality finally set in. He had traded his brilliant, fiercely loyal wife and his innocent son for a comfortable affair and an easy life—and in less than an hour, his entire empire had turned to dust.
