Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Arthur Vance was exactly the kind of man I despised. He was flashy, loud, and wore an expensive suit that didn't quite hide his weak posture. He sat at my boardroom table, sipping my expensive scotch, looking incredibly pleased with himself.

“Mr. Martin,” Arthur said, standing up and extending a hand as I walked into the room. “It’s an absolute honor. I must say, I was surprised when your office reached out about my upstate holdings. We’ve been looking to expand, but a buyout from Wellington could be mutually beneficial.”

I didn't shake his hand. I walked past him and sat at the head of the table. Elizabeth Vance sat to my right, her face an unreadable mask.

Arthur’s hand dropped, his smile faltering slightly. “I see you like to get straight to business.”

“I do,” I said, opening a black leather folder in front of me. “But we aren’t here to talk about your properties, Arthur. We are here to talk about your wife.”

The color immediately left Arthur’s face, replaced by a dark, ugly flush of anger. “What? What does my ex-wife have to do with this? If she’s contacted you, she’s a liar. She’s a criminal who kidnapped my children.”

“She didn't kidnap them,” I said calmly. “She rescued them from a monster. And she didn't contact me. She is currently living at my private estate under my direct protection.”

Arthur let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. “You’ve got to be kidding me. You’re harboring a fugitive? I have a warrant for her arrest! I’ll call the police right now. I’ll ruin you, Martin!”

He reached for his phone, but I didn't move.

“Go ahead,” I said, gesturing to the phone. “Make the call. But before you do, you might want to look at the documents in front of you.”

Elizabeth pushed a thick manila folder across the table.

Arthur hesitated, then snatched it up. As he flipped through the pages, his arrogant smirk dissolved into sheer, unadulterated terror. He began to sweat, his eyes darting frantically across the papers.

“This... this is illegal,” he stammered. “How did you get this?”

“I have better investigators than you have lawyers, Arthur,” I said, leaning forward, my voice dropping to a cold, lethal whisper. “Those are the records of your offshore accounts. Those are the wire transfers to Judge Miller. That is federal bribery, tax evasion, and racketeering. If those documents leave this room, you will be in a federal penitentiary by the weekend. Your family fortune will be seized, and you will have absolutely nothing left.”

“You... you can’t do this,” he whispered, his voice trembling.

“I can do whatever I want,” I said. “Here is how this is going to go. You are going to sign these papers.”

Elizabeth slid a new set of documents across the table.

“What is this?” Arthur asked, his voice shaking.

“A full, uncontested surrender of your parental rights,” Elizabeth said. “Along with a lump-sum child support payment of five million dollars, to be placed in a trust fund for Sophia and Samuel. You will also sign a legally binding affidavit admitting to the falsification of the restraining order upstate.”

Arthur looked at the papers, then up at me, his eyes wide with hatred. “You’re ruining my life for a housekeeper?”

“She is not just a housekeeper,” I said, my voice ringing with absolute authority. “She is the woman I love. And if you ever speak her name, look in her direction, or attempt to contact her or those children again, I will release these files to the Department of Justice. Do we have an agreement?”

May you like

Arthur looked down at the pen in his hand. He was a bully, and like all bullies, when faced with an opponent who was truly stronger, he crumbled.

With a shaking hand, he signed his name on the dotted line.
