Chapter 5 - The Legal Battleground

By noon the next day, my study had been transformed into a war room.

I had summoned Elizabeth Vance (no relation to Arthur, ironically), the most ruthless, highly-paid family law attorney in the state of New York. She sat across from me, reviewing a thick stack of documents my private investigators had compiled overnight on Arthur Vance.

Anna sat beside me, looking anxious but resolute.

“The restraining order Arthur obtained upstate is a sham,” Elizabeth said, tossing a document onto the desk. “He filed it in a county where his family practically owns the local courthouse. The judge who signed it, Judge Miller, has received substantial 'campaign contributions' from the Vance family trust over the last five years.”

“Can we prove bribery?” I asked.

“In a federal court, yes,” Elizabeth replied, a cold smile touching her lips. “But that takes time. Right now, Arthur has a valid warrant for Anna's arrest. If she steps foot outside this property, she can be detained.”

Anna gasped, her hand instinctively reaching for mine under the table. I clasped her hand, squeezing it gently to reassure her.

“Then we don't let her step foot outside,” I said. “What is our offensive move, Elizabeth?”

“We file for emergency sole custody in the federal district court of New York, citing extreme emotional abuse, systemic harassment, and judicial corruption,” Elizabeth explained. “But we need leverage. We need something that makes Arthur Vance back down voluntarily, because a prolonged court battle will be incredibly draining for Anna and the children.”

“I’ll find the leverage,” I said, my voice dangerously calm. “My team is currently auditing Vance Real Estate. Every tax return, every building permit, every offshore account. A man who buys judges doesn't play by the rules anywhere else in his life. I’ll find his weak spot.”

The door to the study slowly creaked open.

Two small heads peeked through the gap. Samuel was still clutching his elephant, while Sophia was holding a half-eaten sugar cookie Julian had secured for them.

“Mommy?” Sophia whispered. “Can we play outside?”

Anna looked at me, silently asking for permission.

“Of course you can,” I said, standing up. “The backyard is fully secure. There are swings near the garden.”

The kids squealed with delight. As Anna rose to take them outside, I watched them run down the hallway. For a brief second, the image of a busy boardroom faded, replaced by the vision of this house filled with the sounds of children laughing.

“Michael,” Elizabeth said, drawing my attention back. She was watching me with a knowing smirk. “You’ve got it bad, haven't you?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I replied, straightening my tie. “I am protecting an employee.”

May you like

“An employee you brought to your private estate, hired a million-dollar legal team for, and whose hand you’ve been holding for the last hour?” Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. “Sure. Let's go with that.”

I didn't answer, but as I looked out the window and saw Anna spinning Sophia around on the grass while Samuel chased a golden butterfly, I knew Elizabeth was entirely right. My fortress had been breached, and I had no intention of rebuilding the walls.
