Chapter 9 - Building the Foundation

The following year was a testament to the power of hard work, love, and clean boundaries. Construction on our house began in the spring. Every weekend, instead of resting from my duties as warehouse supervisor, I drove out to the site to help the crew, laying pipe, hammering drywall, and painting the walls alongside the professionals to save on labor costs.
Hannah spent her days designing the interior, filling the spaces with warmth, light, and love. There would be no cold, neglected rooms here.
My sisters tried to contact me one final time through a letter sent to my workplace, asking for money to help pay off their mounting credit card debts. I didn't get angry. I didn't feel a surge of bitterness. I simply put the letter into the office paper shredder and went back to approving my team's timecards. They were strangers to me now, ghosts of a past life that no longer had power over my present.
By the time Samuel celebrated his first birthday, the house was fully completed.
We officially moved in on a warm June afternoon. The living room was spacious, featuring a wide, comfortable couch that was entirely clean. The television was set to a reasonable volume, playing soft jazz as we unpacked the final boxes.

But the heart of the home was the kitchen.
It was large, open, and flooded with natural sunlight from a massive bay window that looked out over the oak trees. The floors were covered in beautiful, warm hardwood—never again would my wife have to stand barefoot on a freezing linoleum floor, crying over the messes of selfish people.
