Chapter 10 - The Joy of a True Home

Three years later, the grass on our property was lush, green, and perfectly manicured. A colorful wooden playset stood proudly under the shade of the largest oak tree, where a four-year-old Samuel was currently laughing, racing down the slide with absolute joy.
I sat on the wide front porch in a comfortable rocking chair, holding a glass of iced tea. I looked down at my hands. They still had calluses from my days at the warehouse, but they no longer burned with exhaustion. My career had continued to progress; I was now the regional logistics manager, overseeing three different facilities in the Missouri area.
The front door opened, and Hannah stepped out onto the porch. She looked radiant, her hair catching the golden afternoon sunlight. Her hand was resting comfortably on her stomach once again—we were expecting our second child, a little girl this time.
She walked over to my chair, and I pulled her onto my lap, wrapping my arms around her and holding her close.
"Samuel!" Hannah called out happily toward the yard. "Dinner's almost ready! Come wash your hands!"
"Coming, Mommy!" his little voice echoed back, his small boots stomping happily through the grass as he sprinted toward the porch.
As Samuel ran up the steps and slid past us into the house, Hannah turned her head and kissed my cheek.
"What are you thinking about, Marcus?" she asked softly.
I looked out over the beautiful land my grandfather had given me, then at the sturdy, loving home we had built with our own sweat and tears. I thought about the night I had walked into that dark, greasy apartment years ago, broken and betrayed. That pain felt like a lifetime away now, a distant shadow that had completely dissolved in the brilliant light of our reality.

"I'm just thinking about how lucky I am," I smiled, squeezing her hand tightly. "We built our sanctuary, Hannah. And nothing will ever break these walls."
We walked inside together, shutting the door behind us, leaving the rest of the world completely outside. Inside, the kitchen was warm, the table was set for a family that loved one another, and the laughter of our son filled every corner of our beautiful, peaceful home.
