Chapter 4 - The Legal War

The bail hearing for Vanessa Sterling became the spectacle of the year.
Held in the high-ceilinged courtrooms of the downtown justice center, the gallery was packed with reporters, photographers, and curious onlookers. Vanessa sat at the defense table wearing a stark orange jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her pristine aristocratic mask completely shattered. Beside her sat Arthur Pendelton, one of the most expensive and ruthless criminal defense lawyers in the state, hired using the last remaining offshore retainer she managed to pull before the freeze took effect.
I sat on the prosecution side, positioned directly behind the District Attorney, with Elena and my legal team beside me.
"Your Honor," Pendelton argued, standing tall and projecting a booming voice across the courtroom. "My client is a victim of a coordinated character assassination. Mr. Daniel Sterling is using his vast wealth and corporate influence to paint a devoted wife as a monster merely to strip her of her marital rights in an ongoing divorce proceeding. The so-called evidence provided by a disgruntled domestic worker is tampered, unreliable, and illegally recorded!"
The Judge, a formidable woman named Honorable Beatrice Hayes, looked over her spectacles at Pendelton. "Mr. Pendelton, the court has reviewed the digital forensics of the video and audio logs submitted by the state. They carry cryptographic timestamps that are immutable. Are you suggesting the physical bruises on the victim's body were also fabricated?"
"My client maintains that Mrs. Margaret Sterling suffered falls due to her fragile medical state," Pendelton insisted smoothly. "We request immediate bail so Mrs. Sterling can prepare her defense in a suitable environment."
The District Attorney rose to his feet. "Your Honor, the state strongly opposes bail. Furthermore, we are adding charges of corporate espionage, conspiracy to commit fraud, and grand theft. We have uncovered evidence that Mrs. Sterling was actively funneling funds to Julian Mercer, a fugitive from justice, with the intent to flee the country."
Vanessa panicked. She slammed her hands down on the wooden table, startling her attorney. "It wasn't my idea!" she shrieked, her voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "Julian promised me half! He told me Daniel would never notice! Daniel was always working, always obsessed with his stupid company! He neglected me!"
"Quiet, Vanessa!" Pendelton hissed, grabbing her arm.
"No!" she screamed, pointing a trembling, manic finger at me and then at Elena. "He replaced me with that trash! Look at them! He set me up!"
Judge Hayes slammed her gavel down three times, the loud crack cutting through the chaos. "Order in the court! Defendant Sterling, one more outburst and I will hold you in contempt!"
The judge straightened her papers, her face set in stern judgment. "Given the overwhelming physical and digital evidence, the severity of the charges, and the clear flight risk demonstrated by the financial transfers, bail is hereby denied. The defendant will remain in custody pending trial."
As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort Vanessa back to the holding cells, her eyes locked onto mine. She wasn't laughing anymore. There was no arrogance left, only the raw, desperate terror of a predator caught in her own trap.
"Daniel! Please!" she sobbed, her shoes dragging across the floor as the guards pulled her away. "I loved you! Don't do this to me! Think of our eight years!"
I didn't answer. I simply sat there, firm and immovable.
When the courtroom began to clear, Elena turned to me, her brown eyes filled with concern. "Are you alright, Daniel?"
It was the first time she had called me by my first name instead of "Mr. Sterling." Hearing it felt like a breath of fresh, crisp air after years of suffocating formality.

"I'm better than alright," I said, offering her a genuine, warm smile. "For the first time in eight years, I can see clearly."
We walked out of the courthouse together, step by step, leaving the noise of the past behind.
