Chapter 3 - The Depths of Betrayal

By sunrise, the story had broken. Headlines across the financial and news networks blared the shocking news: Tech Tycoon's Wife Arrested for Horrific Elder Abuse. The stock of Valeon Technologies took a temporary dip, but I held a press conference at eight in the morning, taking full accountability, laying out the raw truth, and announcing that all personal profits from the fiscal quarter would be donated to elder protection charities. My transparency turned a potential PR disaster into a wave of public sympathy and respect.
Meanwhile, I spent every available hour at St. Jude's Memorial Hospital.
My mother lay in a private room, connected to IV fluids, her frail frame looking almost lost in the vast white bed. But for the first time in months, the terrified, hunted look in her eyes had begun to recede. Elena was seated beside her, softly reading a book, carefully feeding Margaret small spoonfuls of broth whenever the older woman was hungry.
I stood in the doorway for a long moment, watching them. Elena was thirty-two, a gentle woman who had moved from a small town to work and send money back to her younger sister's medical fund. She wore simple clothes, carried no pretension, and possessed a fierce, quiet nobility that put every high-society socialite I knew to shame.
"Daniel," my mother whispered, noticing me.
I walked over and kissed her forehead, careful not to touch the deep purple bruise on her cheek. "How are you feeling, Mom?"
"Better," she murmured, clutching my hand. "Elena hasn't left my side."
"She never will have to worry about her safety again," I promised, looking up at Elena. "Elena, I can't begin to express my gratitude. You saved my mother's life."
Elena looked down, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Mr. Sterling, I only did what any human being with a heart should do. I couldn't watch her suffer anymore. Mrs. Sterling... Vanessa... she threatened to deport my family, to call the police on me with false theft charges if I spoke up. But when I saw how weak your mother was getting last week, I knew I had to take the risk."
"You took a massive risk," I said sincerely. "And from this moment on, you are no longer an employee in that house. I want to hire you as my mother's head personal care administrator, with a salary four times what you were making, full medical benefits, and legal protection guaranteed by my legal team."
Elena’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Mr. Sterling, that's... that's too much. I didn't do it for money."
"I know you didn't," I smiled gently. "That's precisely why you deserve it."
Later that afternoon, I met with Marcus at my corporate offices. He laid out a thick stack of financial documents on the glass table. What he revealed made my blood run cold.
"Daniel, it's worse than we thought," Marcus said, rubbing his eyes. "When we executed the forensic audit on the accounts Vanessa had access to, we found systematic draining of funds over the last three years. She wasn't just abusing your mother; she was systematically liquidating your personal assets."
"Where did the money go?" I asked, my fists clenching beneath the desk.
"To a shell corporation based in the Cayman Islands," Marcus replied, pushing a document toward me. "And the primary manager of that shell corporation is a man named Julian Mercer."
Julian Mercer. My stomach turned. Mercer was a former business rival whom I had ousted from the tech sector five years ago for illegal insider trading.
"She wasn't just acting out of cruelty," I realized aloud, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place with terrifying clarity. "She was working with Mercer. They were planning to ruin my reputation, drain my liquidity, push my mother to an early grave to claim her inheritance trust, and then leave me penniless and destroyed."
"It appears so," Marcus nodded grimly. "She thought your mother's 'accidental' passing from deteriorating health would trigger the final transfer of the family trust funds directly to her as your spouse. But your sudden return ruined everything."

I stood up, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows of my office at the sprawling skyline below. The betrayal cut deep, but it didn't break me. It illuminated the darkness I had unwittingly allowed into my life.
"Get the district attorney on the line," I commanded, my voice cold as ice. "We aren't just prosecuting her for abuse. We're filing charges for grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy. I want Vanessa Sterling and Julian Mercer put away for a very, very long time."
