Chapter 6 - Playing the Victim

"Sarah!" Daniel cried out, his voice a perfect imitation of a terrified, loving husband. "Oh thank god. Where are you? Let me come get you. I was so worried."

"I... I’m with Clara," I whimpered, squeezing my eyes shut to make the fear in my voice sound genuine. "I don't know what's happening, Daniel. My legs... I fell. My head is spinning. Why did you have those papers in your safe? Why does the doctor want to lock me away?"

On the other end of the line, I heard a faint whisper. It was Rachel, telling him to keep me calm.

"Sweetheart, listen to me," Daniel said, his voice softening into that hypnotic, soothing tone he had used to control me for months. "You’re having a bad reaction to your new medication. The papers in the safe were just copies to protect our estate from tax issues. I locked them up so you wouldn't worry about them while you're sick. The doctor doesn't want to lock you away, Sarah. We want to help you get better at a beautiful recovery clinic. Just tell me where you are, and I’ll come bring you home."

I looked at Clara, who was writing on a notepad: SAY YOU WILL MEET HIM AT THE LAWYER’S OFFICE TOMORROW.

"I don't want to go back to the house," I sobbed. "I’m scared of the house. I want to resolve this. I want to sign whatever you need me to sign so we can just go back to normal. Let’s meet tomorrow morning at your lawyer’s office. I’ll sign the papers, Daniel. I just want the headaches to stop."

A silence hung on the line. I could almost hear the greedy cogs turning in his brain. This was exactly what he wanted. He wanted the signature, and he wanted me quiet.

"Okay, sweetheart," Daniel said, unable to fully hide the triumph in his voice. "If that makes you feel safer, we can do that. We’ll meet at Mr. Vance’s office downtown at ten tomorrow morning. I’ll bring the paperwork. Clara can bring you, and once everything is signed, we’ll get you the medical help you need. I love you, Sarah."

"I love you too, Daniel," I whispered, and hung up the phone.

The moment the line went dead, I spat on the floor. "I feel sick just saying that."

"You did perfectly," Clara said, hugging me. "Now, we have exactly twelve hours. I’m calling Dr. Aris. We’re getting your blood drawn, and then we prepare the stage."

Within two hours, Dr. Aris arrived at Clara’s apartment with a mobile testing kit. He drew my blood and took the partially dissolved pill. By 6:00 AM, the results came back to Clara’s secure email.

The pill was a heavy-duty, restricted neuroleptic sedative, typically used to control severe psychotic episodes in hospitalized patients. In a healthy adult, high doses taken daily would cause extreme cognitive confusion, memory blackouts, severe lethargy, and physical weakness.

"It’s a chemical straightjacket," Clara said, staring at the lab report. "He was slowly erasing you."

I stared at the chemical name on the report. Fluphenazine.

"But that’s not all," Clara added, pointing to a second page. "We found traces of a secondary drug in your bloodstream—an engineered barbiturate. This combination is highly toxic. Over another month, it likely would have caused a fatal cardiac arrest. They weren't just going to commit you, Sarah. Once they had the power of attorney, they were going to kill you and make it look like an accidental overdose due to your 'depression.'"

My blood ran cold. The depth of their malice was unfathomable.

"Now," Clara said, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, brilliant light. "Let’s go to court. Or rather, let’s bring the court to them."
