Chapter 5 - The War Room

"Drink this," Clara said, handing me a steaming mug of black coffee.

We were inside her high-rise apartment downtown. The building had 24-hour security and keycard-only elevator access. For the first time in weeks, I felt a faint, fragile sense of safety. I sat on her sofa, my left ankle tightly wrapped in a compression bandage and elevated on a stack of pillows.

On the glass coffee table lay the documents I had stolen from Daniel’s safe. Clara was pacing the room, her reading glasses pushed up on her head, her face pale with fury as she reviewed the paperwork.

"This is a systematic execution of identity theft and forced confinement," Clara said, her legal mind working at lightning speed. "He’s using a corrupt or incredibly naive doctor—Harrison—to sign off on a psychiatric evaluation that declares you legally incompetent. Once that’s active, Daniel becomes your sole guardian. He can sign your properties over to his shell company, empty your trust fund, and keep you drugged in a private ward indefinitely."

"Can we go to the police?" I asked, my voice still trembling.

"Not yet," Clara said, shaking her head. "If we go now, Daniel will present the medical evaluation signed by Dr. Harrison. He’ll show them your psychiatric history—which he has spent months fabricating through medical reports. He’ll claim you had a manic episode, stole documents, and ran away in the middle of the night because of your 'delusions.' The police might just hand you back to him, or escort you straight to Bellevue Ridge. We need hard, undeniable proof of the drugging and the conspiracy."

"The pill," I whispered.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the crumpled tissue. Inside was the white, half-dissolved pill I had hidden in my cheek.

Clara’s eyes lit up. "This is our silver bullet. I have a close friend, Dr. Aris, who runs a private toxicology lab. He owes me a favor. I’ll get him to run an expedited panel on this pill and a blood test on you right now. We need to prove exactly what chemical they’ve been putting in your system."

"And the house? The deed?"

"We file an immediate emergency injunction on your estate to freeze any transfer of assets," Clara explained, sitting down next to me and grabbing my hand. "But to destroy Daniel and Rachel completely, we need them to incriminate themselves on record. We need them to admit to the plan."

"How?" I asked. "They think I'm running. They’ll be on high alert."

"They think you’re a frightened, confused victim," Clara said, a cold smile touching her lips. "They think the drugs have ruined your mind. We are going to use that arrogance against them. We’re going to let them think they’ve won, right up until the trap snaps shut."

The telephone on Clara's counter rang. It was an unknown number.

Clara picked it up and put it on speaker.

"Sarah?" Daniel’s voice came through the speaker, sounding desperate, frantic, and utterly panicked. "Clara, is Sarah with you? Please tell me she is. She had a terrible episode tonight. She’s confused, she took some papers from my safe, and she’s out there in the cold without her medication. She could hurt herself!"

Clara looked at me. I nodded, taking a deep, stabilizing breath.

"Daniel," I said, putting on my best shaking, disoriented voice. "Daniel, please... my head hurts. Everything is so dark."
