Chapter 3 - The Shell Company and the Spider's Web

Jameson stumbled backward, his knees hitting the edge of the kitchen island. “You bought the debt? That’s impossible! It was held by a private tier-two lending firm!”

“Run by Apex Holdings,” I replied smoothly, crossing my arms. “An investment firm owned entirely by a parent company called Sterling Enterprises. Do you know who owns Sterling, Jameson?”

Arthur’s eyes widened. He was a retired accountant, and the pieces were beginning to fall into place in his mind. “No... Ruby, your family’s estate was dissolved years ago.”

“My family’s estate was restructured, Arthur,” I said, looking at the old man who had spent the last two years treating me like a gold-digging outsider. “I am the sole trustee of Sterling Enterprises. I didn’t just buy your debt this morning. I’ve owned the company that held your debt for the last six months. I allowed you to fall behind on your payments. I allowed you to think you were drowning, just to see how far you would go.”

Jameson’s mother, Eliana, rushed to her son’s side, grabbing his arm. “Jameson, do something! Call the lawyers! She can’t do this!”

“She can, Mom,” Jameson whispered, his voice hollow. “If she owns the debt... she can call in the collateral.”

“Exactly,” I said. “And do you remember what you put up as collateral for that $150,000 loan, Jameson? When you were so desperate to launch your failed marketing campaign?”

Jameson’s eyes darted toward the ceiling, then around the beautiful, custom-designed kitchen.

“This house,” he breathed.

“This house,” I confirmed, my voice dripping with satisfaction. “You signed the deed over as secondary collateral. And since you defaulted on your payment schedule three weeks ago—a default I graciously chose not to report until today—I have already filed the paperwork for immediate foreclosure. This property no longer belongs to you. It belongs to Sterling Enterprises. Which means, by extension, it belongs to me.”

Brooke was sobbing now, tearing at the emerald-green silk robe as if it were burning her skin. She ripped it off, throwing it to the floor, standing in her basic undergarments, shivering and humiliated. “Take it! Take your stupid robe! Jameson, you told me she was weak! You told me she was just a housewife with a trust fund she couldn’t touch!”

“She lied to me!” Jameson yelled, suddenly turning on me, his face red with fury. He lunged forward, but before he could get within two feet of me, the heavy front door of the mansion swung open.

Three men in dark, tailored suits walked into the foyer, led by a tall, imposing woman with her hair pulled back into a sharp bun. It was Clara Vance, my family’s head of security and legal counsel. Behind them stood two uniformed police officers.

“Step back, Mr. Vance,” Clara said, her voice cutting through the room like a blade. “Any physical advancement toward Ms. Ruby Sterling will result in your immediate arrest for assault.”

Jameson froze, his fist trembling in mid-air. He looked at the police, then at Clara, and finally at me. For the first time in our five-year relationship, he saw me for who I truly was. Not the quiet, accommodating wife who stayed in the background, but the apex predator who had been watching him walk into her trap.
