Chapter 8 - The Choice of Grace

I stepped forward, kneeling down so I was eye-level with Brenda Roberts. She flinched, expecting a final verbal blow, her shoulders hunched defensively.

"Look at me, Brenda," I said softly.

Slowly, she raised her head, her tear-stained face twisted with fear and shame.

"Do you know why I didn't destroy you the very first day you insulted me?" I asked, my voice calm and steady. "Because I wanted to teach you a lesson about humility. I wanted you to learn what it truly means to be small, so that maybe, just maybe, you would understand what it feels like to be crushed by someone with more power than you."

Brenda swallowed hard, her lips trembling. "I learned, Elena. God help me, I learned."

"Good," I said, standing back up and adjusting my blazer. "Because unlike you, I don't operate out of malice. I operate out of absolute precision."

I turned to Mark, who was watching us with wide, uncertain eyes.

"Mark, contact our corporate legal team," I instructed clearly. "Ensure that your parents' personal living accounts—strictly for basic housing, medical expenses, and food—are unfrozen immediately. Purchase a modest, comfortable three-bedroom home in a quiet suburb outside the city, and put it in a secure trust in your mother's name so they will never end up on the street."

Brenda’s jaw dropped. She stared at me as if I had just spoken in a foreign language. "You... you're going to help us?"

"I am giving you a roof, basic medical care, and a clean slate," I corrected, looking down at her without a trace of warmth. "Not because you deserve it, but because my daughter has a kind heart, and I refuse to let her grow up in a world where hatred is answered with eternal hatred. But make no mistake, Brenda: David’s federal indictment and the corporate restructuring of Nova Group will proceed exactly as planned. Actions have consequences. Your son made his bed, and now he has to lie in it."

Brenda stared at me, trembling violently, before bowing her head and whispering, "Thank you... thank you, Elena."

"Get up, Brenda," I said, turning my back on her. "And don't ever come uninvited into my home again."

Mark helped his mother to her feet, gently guiding her back toward the private elevator. Without looking back, Brenda stepped inside, the steel doors sliding shut and carrying her down out of our lives forever.
