Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of the Roberts Dynasty

By Christmas afternoon, the fall of the Roberts family was no longer a private corporate matter—it was headline news across every major financial network and social media platform.

The investigative dossier compiled by Vance Global’s forensic team had been released to the press, detailing years of systemic financial fraud, embezzlement, and shady backroom deals within Nova Group’s regional sales division. At the center of the scandal was David Roberts, hailed just yesterday as a rising corporate star, now exposed as a corrupt fraudster facing federal indictment.

Inside the sprawling Roberts estate—the very house they had lorded over everyone else for decades—chaos reigned.

Boxes were piled high in the grand foyer. Movers hired by Vance Global’s real estate subsidiary were already cataloging the furniture, inventorying every antique vase, crystal chandelier, and Persian rug to satisfy the seizure of assets tied to Arthur’s defaulted commercial loans.

Brenda sat rigidly on a velvet sofa that was marked with a neon yellow inventory sticker, her face drained of all color. She looked twenty years older than she had twenty-four hours ago. The pristine, untouchable matriarch of high society was gone, replaced by a terrified woman trapped in the wreckage of her own arrogance.

Clara was pacing the hardwood floor, her phone pressed to her ear for the tenth time that morning, frantically calling lawyers, friends, and old college acquaintances. Every single one of them hung up the moment they heard her name. The moment the scandal broke, the entire high-society circle the Roberts family had spent decades cultivating vanished like smoke. Rich friends don't answer calls from people whose assets have just been frozen by a five-billion-dollar empire.

David was locked in his old bedroom upstairs, refusing to open the door, staring blankly at his laptop screen as online financial blogs roasted his career and corporate downfall into viral memes.

The front door swung open, and Mark walked into the foyer. He looked exhausted, carrying a small duffel bag containing his personal clothes. He had spent the morning trying to mediate with his parents, but reality had finally broken through his denial. His family’s entire existence was built on borrowed money, unearned privilege, and cruelty disguised as etiquette.

"Mark!" Brenda cried out, rushing over to her son and grabbing his coat sleeves. "You have to talk to Elena! You’re her husband! You can fix this! Tell her we're sorry! Tell her we'll apologize to the little brat—"

"Mom, stop," Mark interrupted, pulling his arms away with a sharp, exhausted motion. His voice was completely devoid of its usual hesitation. "Stop calling her that. And stop acting like you're the victims here."

Brenda staggered back as if she had been slapped. "Mark? Are you defending her? After what she did to your family?!"

"What you did," Mark corrected, his eyes flashing with long-suppressed anger. "For five years, I watched you humiliate my wife. I watched you belittle her, mock her background, and treat her like a servant in your own home. And she took it all—not because she was weak, but because she loved me enough to let me try to build something on my own."

Mark shook his head, looking around the opulent foyer that was now effectively a graveyard of their stolen status.

"She owned Vance Global Holdings the entire time, Mom. The five-billion-dollar empire you thought was just a fairy tale? It was hers. And you threw away her daughter's handmade dress and called her a beggar. You didn't just insult a child; you spat on a queen."

Arthur shuffled into the foyer, leaning heavily on his walking stick, his face pale and twisted with rage. "You ungrateful coward! You're siding with that gold-digging witch over your own blood?!"

May you like

"No, Dad," Mark said quietly, turning toward the heavy oak door. "I'm finally siding with my family. My real family. Elena and Lily."

Without another word, Mark turned and walked out of the house, letting the heavy door close behind him with a final, echoing slam.
