Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The conference room on the 50th floor offered a panoramic view of the city skyline. It was the very room where Christopher had signed countless multi-million dollar deals, always taking the credit, always basked in the adulation of the media.

Now, the ten members of the Board of Directors sat around the massive mahogany table, their faces pale and tense. They had been summoned for an emergency meeting at 7:00 AM, and the tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife.

I walked in, flanked by Arthur and a team of top-tier corporate lawyers. I did not take Christopher's usual seat at the head of the table. Instead, I stood, leaning slightly against the back of a chair to ease the pressure on my stitches.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," I said. "I believe you all know who I am. For the past six years, you have known me as Veronica Vale, the supportive, quiet wife of your CEO. Today, you will know me by my birth name: Veronica Sloan, Chairwoman of Sloan Holdings."

A murmur ran through the room. Richard Vance, a veteran board member and a close ally of Christopher, stood up. "Veronica, this is highly irregular. Christopher is the visionary of this company. You cannot simply walk in here after a personal marital dispute and attempt a hostile takeover. The board will not support this."

"This is not a hostile takeover, Richard," I replied calmly. "It is a cleanup operation. Arthur, please distribute the folders."

Arthur placed a thick, black leather folder in front of each board member.

"Inside those folders, you will find evidence of what 'visionary' Christopher Vale has been doing behind your backs for the last eighteen months," I explained. "Under the guise of expansion, he has diverted over forty million dollars of corporate funds into offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands. These companies are owned entirely by him and his mistress, Bianca Wood."

Richard’s mouth opened, but no sound came out as he flipped through the bank transcripts and wire transfers.

"Furthermore," I continued, "he has attempted to sell Vale Dynamics' core AI algorithm—the proprietary software owned exclusively by Sloan Holdings—to our main competitor, Apex Tech. He was planning to declare Vale Dynamics bankrupt after the divorce, purchase the remaining assets at a discount through his shell companies, and relaunch under a new name, leaving you, the board, and our shareholders with nothing but debt."

The room erupted into chaos. Directors slammed their hands on the table, shouting in anger and disbelief.

"This is treason!" one female director gasped. "He was going to ruin us!"

"He believed he was untouchable because he thought I was weak," I said, my voice cutting through the noise. "He thought a pregnant woman, recovering from major surgery, would simply sign the divorce papers, take a few million dollars, and fade into obscurity while he stole my family's legacy. He was wrong."

I tapped the table. "I am proposing an immediate vote to remove Christopher Vale from his position as CEO, effective immediately, on the grounds of gross financial misconduct, breach of fiduciary duty, and corporate espionage. In his place, I will assume the role of interim CEO."

"But what about the public fallout?" Richard Vance asked, his voice shaking. "When the market finds out the face of Vale Dynamics has been ousted for embezzlement, our stock will plummet. We will be ruined anyway."

"The stock will dip," I agreed. "But it will recover. Because today, we are announcing a new partnership with the European Tech Consortium—a deal that Christopher has been trying and failing to secure for two years. I finalized the terms of that agreement from my hospital bed last night, three hours after giving birth to my twins."

I looked around the room, making eye contact with every single director. "I am offering you stability, transparency, and the true power behind this company. Or, you can stand by Christopher and watch Sloan Holdings pull all software licenses by noon today, which will effectively render Vale Dynamics' technology useless. The choice is yours."

One by one, the hands began to rise.

"All in favor of the immediate termination of Christopher Vale?" Arthur asked.

Ten hands went up. It was unanimous.

"Thank you, ladies and gentlemen," I said, finally allowing myself to sit down. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have two children to feed, and a very messy divorce to finalize."
