Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of a Collapse

By mid-afternoon, the Vance name was trending on every local news network, but the real destruction was happening behind the closed doors of the federal building.
I sat in the observation room behind the two-way mirror, watching Marcus. He sat in the interrogation room, stripped of his cashmere sweater, wearing a gray state-issued jumpsuit. His high-priced corporate lawyer had arrived, but within ten minutes of seeing the federal indictments for wire fraud, tax evasion, and interstate transport of a victim to commit a felony, the lawyer had walked out, advising Marcus to seek independent criminal counsel.
The door to the interrogation room opened, and I walked in, carrying a thick manila folder.
Marcus looked up, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling against the metal table. "Eleanor... please. I’ll give her whatever she wants. A divorce. The house. Five million dollars. Just drop the federal charges. Tell the FBI it was a mistake."
I sat down opposite him, slowly opening the folder. I laid out three photographs.
The first was Chloe’s X-ray, showing the shattered rib cage. The second was the bloody golf club recovered from his closet. The third was a document showing a wire transfer of two million dollars from his corporate account to a bank in the Cayman Islands, dated three days ago.
"You didn't beat her because she was embarrassing you, Marcus," I said, leaning forward. "You beat her because she found the double-ledger books. She’s an engineer—she handles your project logistics. She realized you were skimming federal grant money to pay off your gambling debts and fund your mistress’s lifestyle. She was going to report you today."
Marcus closed his eyes, a muscle twitching violently in his jaw.
"You thought if you broke her body and left her at a bus station in a blizzard, she’d be too terrified to speak, or she’d die of exposure before anyone found her," I continued, my voice hitting like a succession of gavel strikes. "And you thought her mother was just a nice old lady who baked pumpkin pies."
"Who are you?" he whispered, his voice cracking with a terror that went down to his bones.
I leaned in close, until he could see the absolute lack of mercy in my eyes.
"I am the nightmare you brought upon yourself when you laid a hand on my daughter. For twenty-five years, I put men far smarter and far more dangerous than you into maximum-security facilities. I know every loophole, every dark corner of the penal code, and every judge in this circuit. I am going to ensure you get the absolute maximum sentence. You will spend the next thirty years of your life in a federal penitentiary, Marcus. And every single day, you will remember this Thanksgiving."
I stood up, closed the folder, and walked to the door.

"Wait! What about my mother?!" he yelled after me. "She didn't do anything! She just helped me move her!"
"Sylvia just signed a full confession in Room 4," I said without looking back. "She turned on you to save herself from a ten-year accessory sentence. Happy Thanksgiving, Marcus."
