Chapter 4 - The Thanksgiving Raid

The Vance estate in Whispering Pines was a monstrous display of neo-colonial arrogance—all white pillars, manicured hedges dusted with fresh snow, and massive arched windows that glowed with warm, golden light.

It was 11:45 AM.

Through the grand dining room window, I could see them. Marcus was standing at the head of a massive mahogany table, wearing a tailored cashmere sweater, laughing as he poured champagne for a man in a bespoke gray suit—Arthur Pendelton, the CEO of the investment firm funding Marcus’s latest multi-million-dollar venture. Sylvia was there too, draped in pearls, beaming as a young, attractive blonde woman sat in Chloe’s rightful chair. The mistress. She was wearing a diamond necklace that I recognized—it had belonged to Marcus's grandmother, a piece he had promised to Chloe.

They were smiling. They were passing the gravy boat. They had erased my daughter before her blood had even dried on the bus terminal bench.

Behind me, four blacked-out tactical vans idled in the blinding snow, completely silent. Twenty SWAT officers, clad in full body armor with 'FBI' and 'POLICE' stenciled in stark white across their backs, waited for my signal.

Captain Miller stood beside me, his hand resting on his service weapon. "Are you sure about this, Eleanor? The CEO is in there. This is going to be a public execution of his reputation."

"That's the point," I said, pulling my old federal prosecutor badge from my pocket and pinning it to my coat lapel. "Marcus wanted a clean table. Let's give him some uninvited guests."

I raised my hand, then brought it down. "Breach."

The silence of the wealthy neighborhood was instantly shattered by the deafening roar of a flashbang exploding on the front porch. The heavy oak front door didn't just open—it disintegrated under the force of a tactical battering ram.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE! DROP TO THE GROUND!"

The shouts echoed through the cavernous house as a sea of black armor flooded the foyer. I walked in right behind the shield wall, my boots clicking rhythmically against the pristine marble floor.

We burst into the dining room just as Marcus was jumping up from his chair, his face contorted in rage, his hand reaching toward his waistband.

"What the hell is the meaning of this?!" Marcus roared, his voice cracking. "Do you know who I am? Get these weapons out of my face!"

"Down on the ground, Mr. Vance!" a SWAT officer screamed, leveling an M4 rifle at his chest.

Sylvia shrieked, clutching her pearls, while the mistress scrambled backward, knocking over a crystal goblet of red wine that spilled across the five-thousand-dollar Persian rug like a fresh pool of blood.

Marcus’s eyes darted around the room, frantic, until they landed on me. He stopped breathing.

"Eleanor?" he stammered, his arrogance momentarily faltering. "What... what are you doing here? What did you do?"

"I came to check on the garbage, Marcus," I said, stepping through the line of officers.
