Chapter 6 - The Weight of Retribution

Three days after the disaster on Saint Barthélemy, the tropical storm of public humiliation had expanded into a full-scale hurricane for the Sterling family and Ethan Cole. Lily was resting comfortably in our private penthouse suite in Manhattan, her arm encased in a lightweight purple cast signed with colorful cartoon characters drawn by her medical team.

I sat at my mahogany desk on the 50th floor of the Blackthorne Tower, looking out over the misty Manhattan skyline. The morning financial papers were laid out before me. The Wall Street Journal had a front-page article on the sudden collapse of Apex Solutions and the arrest of its CEO, Ethan Cole, on charges of investor fraud and grand larceny.

My private secretary tapped on the door. “Ms. Blackthorne, there are three people in the main lobby downstairs demanding to see you. Security says they don't have appointments, but they are creating a severe disturbance.”

“Who are they?” I asked, though I already knew the answer.

“A Mr. and Mrs. Richard Sterling, and a young woman named Vanessa,” she replied. “They claim they are your family and that you are illegally withholding their personal belongings.”

I smiled faintly. “Send them up. But have four armed security guards stand inside the room.”

Five minutes later, the double doors of my corner office burst open. My parents and sister rushed in, looking like pale, hollow shells of the arrogant royalty that had strutted across the island three days ago. Vanessa was wearing cheap, oversized sweatpants and no makeup, her eyes swollen from crying. My father’s designer suit was rumpled, his hands trembling with visible withdrawal shakes. Evelyn looked fifteen years older, her manicured hair messy and unkempt.

“Claire!” Evelyn shrieked, making a desperate dash toward my desk before two large security guards stepped into her path, blocking her with rigid arms. “Claire, you have to help us! The police took Ethan yesterday! He’s in federal custody! The bank froze all his accounts, and his parents called us saying they’re suing our family for fraud!”

“And the sheriff showed up at our house in the Hamptons this morning!” Richard yelled, his voice cracking with panicked desperation. “They served us an eviction notice! They said the mortgage trust was called in by Blackthorne Capital! We have forty-eight hours to pack our bags and leave!”

Vanessa threw herself onto the marble floor, sobbing hysterically. “Claire! Please! Everyone is laughing at me on the internet! I’m trending on TikTok as the ‘Fake Bride’! All my brand deals were canceled! My friends blocked my number! You have billions! You’re the CEO of Blackthorne! Just fix this! Give us ten million dollars and stop the eviction! We’re your family!”

I leaned back in my executive leather chair, folding my hands neatly over my lap. I looked at the three of them, waiting until their desperate screams died down into breathless panting.

“Family?” I asked softly. The word felt heavy and strange in my mouth. “Is family the word you use for people who let an eight-year-old child lay bleeding on stone stairs? Is family what you call a mother who slaps her daughter for trying to call an ambulance? Is family what you call a grandfather who strikes a child’s face and calls her a dramatic brat while her arm is broken?”

Richard flinched as if struck. “Claire... I was drunk... I didn’t mean—”

“You meant every single hit, dad,” I interrupted sharply. “You hit her because you hated that she was my daughter. You hated that I didn’t flatter your ego. You spent twenty-eight years treating me like an inferior servant while showering Vanessa with praise for doing nothing with her life except being vain and cruel.”

“We loved you, Claire!” Evelyn wept, pressing her hands against her heart. “We were just hard on you so you would succeed! Look at you now! You’re a billionaire! We made you who you are!”

“No,” I said, rising slowly from my seat and walking around the desk to stand right before them. “You didn’t make me. You tried to break me. I built Blackthorne Capital in spite of you. Every late night, every deal, every dollar was built while I fought through the shame and worthlessness you planted in my chest.”
