Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Deceit

The Sikorsky S-76 lifted off into the starlit sky, its powerful turbine engines drowning out the desperate screams of my family below. Looking down through the reinforced glass window, I watched the dark, unlit island fade into the black sea. The resort was completely dead—no lights, no music, no service. Just fifty wealthy, arrogant wedding guests stranded in pitch darkness on a remote tropical rock with no food, no air conditioning, and no way off the island until sunrise.

I sat beside Lily’s stretcher, gently holding her uninjured hand. The flight medic looked up at me with a soft expression. “She’s resting comfortably, Ms. Blackthorne. The X-rays from the portable machine confirm a clean fracture in her left radius. It will require a cast and a few weeks of rest, but she will make a full recovery. The head laceration is shallow and only required three small stitches.”

A massive weight lifted off my chest, and for the first time that night, tears welled in my eyes. I leaned down and kissed Lily’s forehead gently. “I’m sorry, sweetie,” I whispered. “I am so sorry I didn’t protect you sooner.”

When the helicopter landed at the private medical facility in Saint Martin, Julian Vance was waiting on the tarmac with a team of corporate lawyers and security personnel. Julian had been my top lieutenant for six years—a brilliant, fiercely loyal former intelligence officer who knew every detail of my life and business empire.

“Lily is in excellent hands with Dr. Dupont’s team,” Julian assured me as the medical staff transferred her to a private suite. “Now, boss, we need to address the immediate fallout and execute phase two.”

We walked into a private conference room inside the facility. Julian opened his laptop, projecting financial feeds and social media tracking tools onto the wall screen.

“First,” Julian began, tapping a key, “Ethan Cole’s company, Apex Solutions, has been officially served. Our legal team filed default judgments in the Delaware Chancery Court three hours ago. By tomorrow morning when Wall Street opens, Apex Solutions’ public shell merger will collapse. Ethan is facing criminal investigations from the SEC for misrepresenting collateral.”

“Good,” I said coldly. “What about the wedding guests on the island?”

“They are currently trapped in the dark,” Julian smiled grimly. “The local ferry operators have been instructed not to charter any private evacuations until 8:00 AM under standard maritime maintenance protocol. However, news has already leaked to the press. Several high-society influencers at the reception managed to post videos on TikTok and Instagram before the cellular signal boosters were deactivated.”

Julian played a video clip. It showed Vanessa in her ruined, wine-stained gown, screeching at empty darkness, while my father staggered into a palm tree and my mother sat on a designer sofa weeping surrounded by unwashed dinner plates. The video already had over four million views, with captions reading: ‘Billionaire Groom turns out to be Fraud! Island cut off power at $2M Wedding!’

“The internet is having a field day,” Julian noted. “They don’t know your true identity yet, as Blackthorne Capital operates under tight privacy structures, but Vanessa and Ethan are officially ruined socially.”

“That is only the beginning,” I said, resting my chin on my hands. “My parents bought their house in the Hamptons using a second mortgage that was secretly bought out by one of Blackthorne’s real estate trust funds two years ago when they fell behind on payments. I kept them afloat out of filial duty.”

I looked at Julian with eyes that burned like cold starlight. “Terminate the trust protection. Call in the mortgage note. Evict them.”
