Chapter 6 - The Arraignment

Two days later, the municipal courthouse was packed with media and onlookers. News vans crowded the curbside, broadcasting the shocking story of the "birthday cake assault" across local news networks. It turned out that when Detective Miller cross-referenced Richard's evidence with the local police database, they uncovered three other unreported violent incidents involving Ashley over the past two years.

Lily was safely playing with educational games in a private victim-advocacy room down the hall, supervised by a social worker.

I sat in the front row of the courtroom, flanked by Detective Miller and my legal counsel. As the heavy wooden side doors opened, two bailiffs led Ashley into the room.

Gone was the cocky, gum-chewing arrogance. Her hair was unwashed, her face was pale, and she wore a standard orange inmate jumpsuit with her wrists cuffed. When her eyes scanned the courtroom and landed on me, a flash of pure malice crossed her features. She opened her mouth as if to scream, but her defense attorney quickly pulled her arm down and whispered fiercely into her ear.

Moments later, my mother and stepfather entered the gallery. My mother looked ten years older, her face contorted in a mix of fury and despair. She tried to catch my eye, mouthing 'How could you do this?', but I turned my head away, refusing to grant her another second of my emotional energy.

The judge, a formidable woman with iron-gray hair and sharp spectacles, banged her gavel.

"Calling case number CR-2026-8891, The State versus Ashley Parker," the judge announced, her voice echoing through the solemn room. "The charges include felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, and conspiracy to commit bodily harm."

Ashley’s attorney stood up, nervously adjusting his tie. "Your Honor, my client pleads not guilty to all charges. We maintain that this was an unfortunate, reckless accident during a festive celebration, blown entirely out of proportion by media sensationalism."

Detective Miller immediately stood up, handing a fresh evidence dossier to the bailiff, who delivered it to the judge's bench. "Your Honor, the State submits newly discovered forensic evidence, text message confessions indicating premeditated intent, and a historical record of severe behavioral misconduct concealed by family members."

The judge opened the folder, reading the documents silently. As the minutes ticked by, the expression on her face grew darker and graver.
